Keep losing USB hub, mouse and keyboard

I recently got a new raspberry pi model B (512mb) from newark canada.
I installed the recommended operating system.
I have tried connecting mouse and keyboard directly into the pi (logitech mk120 - mouse and keyboard on the list of confirmed working keyboards) and through a powered usb hub (belkin high speed 2.0 7 port usb hub - also confirmed to work with raspberry pi). Sometimes they work for a minute or two, enough to use the startx command and get into the operating system. At most it has worked for around 5minutes. But more often than not, the pi refuses to take mouse and keyboard input at the login prompt, sometimes i just get a bunch of repeated characters from the last key i pressed.
I have tried two power supplies (one which came with the pi)

rated at 1000ma. But i have also tried a second rated at 700ma.
If i have it connected to the hub, when it fails all the lights on the hub turn off and it rarely comes back on.
Do I have a faulty pi?
I appreciate any help.
