Pi3b+ Hangs, Chromium's fault?

Fri Apr 10, 2020 7:20 pm

Hi

been using a Pi3B+ a bit more now due to the lockdown and I have been experiencing a lot of crashes.

It seems to always be caused by Chromium which ended up in the wrong page and could never recover.
Not that I open tons of tabs, 1 is enough if it is the right one.

Left it there for 10 minutes and nothing happened. It still replies to pings but ssh or local console are not responding.

Having read some other messages, it seems a common issue.
Heavy usage of SD Card or low RAM seem to be the causes: is there some way to limit the amount of damages Chromium can do?
I'd rather Chromium killed by the OOM killer or other, than having to power cycle the Pi when the yellow light is solid.

Use any other browser. Chromium is a resource hog, always has been.

This unit am using now to post this forum is a RPi3B+
power source is non-RPF 5v 3.0A PSU
native USB booting from 60GB SSD
(still) running Raspbian Stretch Full desktop
running Chromium (with 8 active tabs) to access this site, and typing this post
a swapfile of 1000MB was setup and enabled on the SSD
Note: setting up and enabling swapfile on a microSD, though doable, not recommended as it shortens the usable life of the microSD

this is how I've "stressed" the setup....
RPi3B+Desktop_vnc_RPi3B.jpg
RPi3B+Desktop_vnc_RPi3B.jpg (233.25 KiB) Viewed 169 times
and went well
did it several times over
no problems

Come to me with 'problems' and I'll help you find solutions"

Some people be like:
"Help me! Am drowning! But dont you dare touch me nor come near me!"

I agree.
Years ago the Pi used to ship with a different browser, maybe they should have not moved to chromium.

There's still Günter Kreidl's kweb. viewtopic.php?t=40860 that has less bloat than Chromium.
