Firmware is not updating... (i think)

Thu Apr 09, 2020 7:42 pm

Hi Guys

I think i am having some issues with automatic firmware updates. I just noticed that stable firmware are newer that the one I have installed. For example on GitHub last stable firmware is:

pieeprom-2020-03-19.bin

and even before that there was one dated 2020-01-17. On my Pi4 however I still have the one from September 2019. Here is the output:

Code: Select all

BCM2711 detected
BOOTLOADER: up-to-date
CURRENT: Tue 10 Sep 2019 10:41:50 AM UTC (1568112110)
 LATEST: Tue 10 Sep 2019 10:41:50 AM UTC (1568112110)
 FW DIR: /lib/firmware/raspberrypi/bootloader/critical
VL805: up-to-date
CURRENT: 000137ad
 LATEST: 000137ad
What might be the issue that firmware on Pi4 stuck on 2019 version?

It should be updated automatically by rpi-eeprom-update right?

Thank you.

My RPi4B4G behaves the same way.
The VL805 did auto update awhile back but these never change:

Code: Select all

CURRENT: Tue 10 Sep 2019 10:41:50 AM UTC (1568112110)
 LATEST: Tue 10 Sep 2019 10:41:50 AM UTC (1568112110)
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated RPiOS Buster w/ Desktop OS.

Is there actually anyone who got auto update to newer firmware than 10-Sep-2019?

@4k3or3et, critical is the default firmware path. that will be updated automatically.
if you want to switch to stable or beta, you have to switch the firmware path by hand once.

edit /etc/default/rpi-eeprom-update from "critical" to "stable"

i changed my to stable, but i could not observe an automaticaly update... i have to trigger it by hand

Code: Select all

sudo rpi-eeprom-update -a
PS.: i don't know, why "critical" is the default firmware path and why not "stable"

PPS.: this is what is got from todays update

Code: Select all

BOOTLOADER: up-to-date

Sorted out. Thanks for clarification Man!

After changing '/etc/default/rpi-eeprom-update' config file to stable you have to perform two times 'init 6' and the firmware gets updated automatically.
