Raspberry 4B doesn't boot from 32GB sd

Fri Mar 27, 2020 1:24 pm

Hello,

I hope someone can help me with this. I have read a lot of things and tried a lot of things. I don't know what to try next. The situation:
  • I have a Raspbery Pi 4B 2GB
  • I have a Sandisk Ultra 32GB
  • I use the Raspberry Pi Imager program to write to the 32GB
  • When I put the card in my Linux system I can see two partitions and all files on it.
  • But when I boot from it with the Pi, I get repeating 4 flashes from the green led.
  • I got a replacement 32GB card, the same story.
  • I tried a 16GB card lying around, that one works without problems.
So I am wondering. Do have two bogus 32GB SD cards, do I have a problem with my pi? Or with my card reader/writer. Any suggestions?

Greetings, Joran.

Try another sd-card programmer, some won't work well with 32GB cards.

a cheap poundland USB programmer will probably do the trick.

Also check if your SD-card isn't a fake, with a program that checks if sd-cards are genuine.

where did the 32gb cards come from?? the success of the 16gb card does raise valid suspicion.

Thank you for your suggestions. I am now using H2testw to test the sd card on another computer. Tests on my Linux computer (with another tool failed). I will return later to let you know the results.

The cards come from a reputable source; a local shop specialized in raspberry pi and DIY electronics.

Hello,

I tested the 32GB card using H2testw, which was successful. Using raspberry pi imager, i wrote an image on the 32GB card using the same computer. Tried it out, and it still doesn't work. I get the repeating four times flashing green led.

I think I would now need to look at the Raspberry Pi. The best thing would be to test the card on another Pi. But I do not have easy access to a pi at the moment.

I will update when I know more.

Greetings, Joran.

I had an old raspberry pi 1 lying around. Put the 32GB card in that one (with adapter) and it booted from it.

Can I conclude now that my Raspberry Pi 4B is broken?

Do you have another sd card?

Yes, I have now 2 32GB cards that do not work with my Pi 4B, and a 16GB card that does work in my Pi 4B.

And now I tested one of the 32GB cards in my Pi 1, which works.

If you have a working 16GB SD card then try doing a full update using

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
Then reboot your pi, then shutdown and try booting from your 32GB SD cards

Did you try a different USB card reader ?

Assuming you are using the desktop version of raspbian and you have a USB card reader , have you tried cloning the the 16GB SD card to the 32GB SD card, using the built-in tool.

You could also do this using win dsk32 imager to copy your 16GB card to an image file and then write this to the 32GB SD card, you can then use raspi-config to expand the OS to use all the card.

Odd indeed.. you could try to clean the card contacts with isopropanol or similar, and if still no luck you can try adding a layer of sellotape to the card top to add a fraction of thickness and aid pushing the contacts onto its connectors..

The canonical answer for this problem is that you are using a SD-card programmer that is NOT completely compatible with 32GB cards and doesn't support SDXC cards, only SDHC cards.

Any cheap programmer you buy these days, even cheap ones, should be capable of handling SDXC, but the one built in somewhat older PC's might not be.

I'm facing the exact same issue; new RPI4 with 32GB Sandisk SDCard. The SD Card is marked as a SDHC card and not a SDXC card.
That is irrelevant, as the problem is not in the SD-CARD but in the card writer of your laptop that doesn't support >= 32GB SDXC cards.

not sure how and why but my previous post got amended... I hope that's not a common thing done by admins....

i'm failing to understand the logic that if you have a SDHC card which is 32GB and you have a SDHC writer which supports that card type, why the PI 4 wouldn't be able to handle it. If it was a SDXC card using a SDHC writer , ok. but it's not.

anyhow today I bought a Ewent USB 3.1 card reader which supports SDXC but still the PI won't boot from the 32GB SDHC card. I also bought a 64GB SDXC card and will see if that works.

The 64GB SDXC card works without any problem. I think there is still a gap in the bootrom handling specific scenario's for 32GB cards. the card can be either SDHC and SDXC and the PI does not seem to properly handle that. It also looks like i'm not the only person having this problem. I will also drop a mail to my retailer to see if they received similar complaints and if they have been able to resolve it and if so, how.

I'm wondering how this can be highlighted to the development team. I'm willing to provide additional information for debugging and/or test if needed.

The problem may be related to specific 32GB SD cards, as many users don't have a problem with the pi4B and 32GB SD cards.

my own sandisk SDHC UHS-1 A1 SD card will boot both my pi4B 2GB and pi4 4GB without any problems.

+1 FWIW All the 32Gb uSDHC cards shown here: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_p ... cards.html and 5 other samples ( 2xToshiba, 2xQumox & 1xVerbatim) not yet added therein, have worked w/o problems (athough the Qumox ones are slow) for me. Where, in other threads, it's been possible to obtain the CID** of a problem card, I've been decoding that and logging it but, as of yet, there has been no obvious pattern other than, maybe, the "offending" cards might be "older" than might have been expected.
