wrong OTP for pi4?

Thu Mar 19, 2020 7:41 pm

Hi

I have two Pi4 absolutely same with absolutely same SSD USB adapters and same SSDs.
I am trying to boot from SDcard but having SSD connected via USB adapter
It looks like it should work by default. First Pi is working absolutely fine but second Pi stucks on boot. Unfortunately second Pi is remote, and I cannot see the screen.

First look gave this:
When SSD is attached and SSD has as minimum one partition pi does not boot
When SSD is attached and has no partitions pi boots normally
When SSD is not attached pi boots normally

so it looks like it is trying to boot from SSD partition first on failing pi.
I looked deeper and have found difference between these Pi`s - otp boot parameter is different:
first_pi:~ $ vcgencmd otp_dump | grep 17
17:000008b0
second_pi:~ $ vcgencmd otp_dump | grep 17
17:000808b0
I tried to play with parameters on /boot/config.txt but it does not look that it changes a much to OTP

could you please give a hint how to change this OTP parameter or any direction should I dig?

do you have access to a serial adapter?
what does it show on the serial port while booting?

I'm not sure if the OTP settings have any effect on the boot process. The Pi4 uses the eeprom for those settings. Have a look at the output of:

Code: Select all

vcgencmd bootloader_config
See also https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... _config.md

Additionally

Code: Select all

vcdbg log msg
might show a difference.

the only thing the OTP really does on a 4, is control its ability to boot from the EEPROM, so you can possibly brick it if you change register 17

i believe the firmware understands that, and will refuse to program reg17 with the old config flags

I see, but why its different? Could be that previous owner made changes to it. So I would take a risk to change it to state of correctly working pi.

content of the cmdline.txt (root is different) is a result of trying to play with this value, but do not give any difference, because I believe that problem is /boot mount

If you're still getting that error message then your image is antique and I'm surprised it works at all. The message was removed in Jan 2019 https://github.com/raspberrypi/userland ... cd9609bb34

the only thing the OTP really does on a 4, is control its ability to boot from the EEPROM, so you can possibly brick it if you change register 17

i believe the firmware understands that, and will refuse to program reg17 with the old config flags
I see, but why its different? Could be that previous owner made changes to it. So I would take a risk to change it to state of correctly working pi.
the limited rpi4 docs i do have (which all come from reverse engineering) dont say what the changed bit does, so i have no clue what side-effects it will have

but if your seeing a rainbow screen, then its pretty much past what the OTP and SPI are responsible for
