Can't copy a large file within Rpi desktop

Sat Dec 22, 2012 9:10 am

Hi All,

(FYI: I'm running the "B version" R-pi)
I have successfully installed the R-pi distro on a few different SDcards (class 10), being 8,16 & 32gb in size, then doing a resize afterwards to make FULL use of the card to store movies etc....

I was trying to copy a 1.5gb movie file (.avi) into the "/root//videos" folder (or any folder) and find that the copy process stops anywhere between 25% to 75% complete.
While the pi/desktop seems to have halted, the usb key is still flashing.
(copying a movie from usb stick into R-pi folder).

My pi is powered from a nearby laptop, so i'm GUESSING maybe i'm drawing too much current during the copy process?

Or is there something else i need to tweak?

Thanx in advance.

Powering the rpi from anything but a dedicated PSU or powered hub could be risky. The laptop's USB port can deliver, what's the spec, 400mA maximum? That is
lower than the pi would normally need. I would suggest getting another power source for your pi.
