Raspberry Pi 4b is not booting after rpi-update.

Tue Feb 11, 2020 6:32 am

I have an issue with raspberry pi 4b after rpi-update yesterday.
I have checked below link but the problem still exists. Nothing changed.
https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... hp?t=38325
My Pi hangs after "random: crng init done".
I have added initcall_debug=1 to my cmdline.txt. "random: crng init done" disappeared but boot hangs out on:

Code: Select all

probe of 1-1.4 returned after 183354 usecs

rpi-update comes with a warning that it can ruin your system and cause it to not boot, among other things.

If I may, why did you;
a) think you needed rpi-update
B) not read the warning

To fix your Pi, you need to reflash the SD card or restore a backup if you have one.

The recommended update method is via
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade

It might be worth trying over_voltage=1 in config.txt and removing any over clocking settings

Hello together,

I have the same issue as dukedude since yesterday evening (2020-02-10) after I upgraded the System (running Buster Lite Image from 2019-09-26) with

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
I don´t run RPI-Update or things like that.

After that I flashed a new SD (because I had no time to search for errors ) with the newest Rasbian Image from 2020-02-05 (with Desktop, but without "recommended Software). After I configured my Raspi with

Code: Select all

sudo raspi-config
and after the final reboot the same issue occurred.

But I started raspi-config mutliple times to configure Localization, SSH, VNC etc. and I reboot also multible times between these steps without any issue.
I believe my last step in raspi-config was to configure the raspi to "Wait for Network after reboot". And after this final reboot the System is not longer reachable.
I am not at home, so its not possible for me to look on a physical display. For now SSH should be my single way to my Raspi :(

My IP Configuration is static and I don´t use DHCP.

The System runs prior this issue for weeks very stable without any issues or errors. I don´t use overclocking settings or other things like that.

I hope this helps to figure out the issue.

Regards, Omicron01

Fine, I didn't know that we can't update when we want to do it: rpi-update anytime. Now I know that there is something wrong.
BTW. I have refleshed the SD card, but after that when I setup my password and language, restarting there is an another issue:
bcm2835-clk fe101000.cprman: plla couldn' lock PLL
bcm2835-clk fe101000.cprman: plla couldn' lock PLL
bcm2835-clk fe101000.cprman: plla couldn' lock PLL
bcm2835-clk fe101000.cprman: plla couldn' lock PLL

I thinks that is something connected to language. I see this one first time. I have raspberry pi 4 b more than 6 months.

Maybe I do this next time. It's too late now because I have refleshed my sd card.

Could you explain what you are talking about? It doesn't help me anyway.

It does not state anywhere to use rpi-update, so you need to undo the changes :?

We are currently looking in to some boot issues that have suddenly started appearing.

I can't undo the changes. I need a patch or a previous image.

If you are working on a solution could you share a previous image?

I didn't skip a network configuration. It works.

Hi dukedude,

you did or you did not skip the network setting?

Please discribe what exactly you have done or you have not done.

Thanks in advance...

For anyone having a non-bootable Pi4 after a simple apt-get upgrade with:
bcm2835-clk fe101000.cprman: plla couldn' lock PLL
Restoring the kernel/firmware files to a previous build allows the system to boot again.

I'm not sure which file is actually responsible, but since most of the files on the /boot (FAT) partition were modified by the update, I'd restore them all.

The files from the Jan 6 commit appear to work: https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware ... 60d80/boot
One is glad to be of service
