PI 0 W does not detect PI HUT "wireless game controller"

Hi,
So I have purchased a PI HUT "Raspberry PI compatible wireless gamepad controller" and have been trying to use the approxeng.input library with a camjam chassis.
I have been using the latest release of Raspbian buster , ( before Feb 6th and later).
The controller is not always detected, I have tried powering the PI 0 from batteries and mains . I have also tried two different PI 0's.
On the pre Feb 6th release of Raspbian it did connect if I powered everything up, started the python script, disconnected the dongle and then re-connected it.
I have looked at evdev and the folder /dev/input has no entry for the controller.
Has anyone else had a similar problem, my PI3 always seems to detect the controller.
