[Solved] Pi4 Red LED status lights

Mon Feb 03, 2020 9:46 pm

This is my first post here, so sorry if I'm not following the correct format and/or this has been answered before. I tried looking but could not find a similar question/solution.

I recently purchased a Raspberry Pi 4 basic starter kit with aluminum case (Amazon Link). I am a completely new Raspberry Pi and Linux user, but am really enjoying it so far. The one question I have is regarding the LED status lights on the Pi. I have a USB keyboard, mouse, HDMI display, and the provided power supply plugged into the Pi, and nothing more. Yet consistently, whenever I turn it on, the two LED status lights are solid red, and not any other color (no flashing or anything else, just solid red). Here is a picture:

Oddly, however, the system still boots fine, I am able to use all my peripherals, and don't seem to have any useability issues with the system (I'm literally typing this post on my Pi4 right now). What could be causing this? From initial reading it seems like the the red color is not normal? How can I fix this issue, or even begin to troubleshoot?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

That's a bit odd because I thought the Pi 4B had one red (power) and one green (activity) status LED. It could be bleed from the red LED into the light pipe for the green LED if it has light pipes fitted.

My guess is it's a flaw in the case design and you're seeing a reflection of the power LED through the activity LED (which is green). Note: The actual LEDs are not positioned where you see them so either a fibre tube is being used or some other electronics.

Take out the cover and confirm if only the red LED is the only one that is functioning and the green LED is not showing "sign of life".

Thanks guys! I took the cover off, booted it up, and saw one constant red LED and one blinking green LED correctly showing activity. Woot!
