SD cards

Fri Jan 10, 2020 4:46 pm

I have a 32Gb SD card that I was formatting with 'SD Card Formatter' when the system crashed before formatting was completed. Now I cannot do anything with the card. SD Card Formatter wont recognise it nor will W10 formatter. It does not show up as a drive in 'This PC'.

Any suggestion how to get it back in use?

Thanks, Brian

Stick it in a camera to see if the camera will format it.

It's for my Pi. I tried the Pi program SD Copy but this worked copying for a couple of hours then gave me a failed message.

It might have been killed by an interrupted write or a bad card to start.

About half the low cost deals on Ebay are fake and in fact some do not even have an SD controller inside. You can tell the seller is a crook when they refund immediately w/o asking for pic, more info, or return. They do this because you can't leave feedback after refund. IMO better to stick with reliable sellers like Newegg etc for this particular product line.

No matter the source it would be wise to check every new card with a program like h2testw.exe before even thinking of using it.

MMMnnn., interesting. It has worked in the past and it is a Samsung card (presumably!) I am assuming a bad write due to the computer stopping.

Often depends on what 'working' means. Sometimes the bad cards don't fail til almost full or a lot less. Labels don't matter too much because the Chinese are very good at photo-lithography. They are also expert at re-flashing the controller to make it look much bigger than it really is. IMO where you buy them from is more important than labels or ad claims.

That program is the only way I found to be sure and also provide definitive speed info. Some times the fakes aren't actually bad but just crazy slow. Or VERY early failure. In any case probably dead if you can't format on Pi or PC so maybe time to go shopping again.

Yes, I understand what you are saying but for the moment I am going to assume it is not fake as I have been using it successfully for some time.

I am interested in if there is a way to re-format it assuming it was a good card to begin with. I am assuming the failed format has somehow destroyed any 'formatting' or data integrity it had before. There must be a program out there to do this otherwise I just dump it (I don''t remember where I got it from.)
Thanks

If you are formatting the card to install NOOB's on it, then the simple answer is not to bother.

Use the Raspbian image from

https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/

and copy it onto the SD card with Balena Etcher.

No need to format the disk first.

No Go. As with all my other attempts the system (Windows10) does not even recognise the sd card inserted into the USB slot so it does nothing.

This can happen if physical sector zero was corrupted. My XP will not recognize or allow any operation at all unless it is first converted from GPT to MBR with Diskpart on a Win10 computer. There are ways to restore a totally destroyed sector 0 but requires an external MCU like PIC or AVR. Generally not practical in most cased though.

You do know fastest type (A1) only cost three or four dollars even from trusted sources? Two bucks at Wally World a few weeks back.

I didn't get where I am by throwing sd cards to the wind  by the way - where am I?
:D

I will keep trying - and order another one off eBay.

Aha.. that explains a lot. :) Be very careful. Full verify not an option there IMO.

PS moving around so much sometimes I wonder where I am.

Thanks for all the help and support...

I don't have a video camera so could not try that option - but....

Last thing last night I tried 'SD Card Formatter' again and this time it recognised the SD card and I formatted it overnight. :o

Will use 'SD copy' on the Pi to make a copy of my card, see what happens later today.

As a more reliable alternative to the lottery that is eBay I suggest popping in to your local Argos outlet in St Mary's Place and ordering 379/2054 over the counter.
