RPi 4 booting issues (stops booting after apt-get update)

Thu Dec 05, 2019 5:55 pm

I recently bought a RPi 4 2gb version. I got it to boot and as soon as I run apt-get update it stops booting from that point. I thought maybe it was due to my 8GB microsd card so I bought a 16GB one. I got the same result. What is this issue? Never experienced it on older Pi models. It's getting annoying.

Do you successfully get it setup, such that it is connected to a network and monitor? Will it correctly reboot at that point? Are you connecting of ethernet or wifi? What are you using as a monitor? What exactly do you mean by "its not booting"? No indication of activity on the leds, nothing displayed on the monitor, or what?

8 GB is likely too small for a Full Buster install. Buster Lite would fit. Once you do the initial install and get networking and a monitor setup, run

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
"apt" is the better command for interactive use.

My apologies for not adding these details. Now I am using a 16GB microSD card and using Debian Buster Lite 10. I get it running, it resizes/ adjusts partitions and reboots successfully. Once I run the apt-get update & upgrade commands and reboot. i get nothing but a red LED only. The same behavior has happened every time.

What?
Do you really mean DebIan not Raspbian?

Do you see any green LED activity immediately after power-on ? Please also try booting powering on with the sd-card removed and monitoring the green LED.

I mean Raspbian Buster Lite.
I don't see any green LED. There isn't any problem with the bootloader. There is only the Red light that turns on as soon as I power it.

Try to remove the sd memory card from the slot and turn on Raspberry.
In this case, the green LED should blink several times. The red LED should also light.
If the green LED does not blink without a memory card, then this is a raspberry critical error.

I removed the Microsd card and turned on the RPi and I can confirm that only the RED LED lights up. However on flashing a new image on the Microsd card it boots fine.

What do I do now? How should I resolve this persistent error? is my Raspberry Pi faulty?
