New Raspberry Pi 4 won't boot

Sun Sep 08, 2019 6:15 pm

So this is the first Raspberry Pi that I've ever had trouble with. I'm using the official PSU, the official keyboard, mouse and video cable, and a Dell U2515H display but… my Raspberry Pi won't start. I'm using a Sandisk 64GB Ultra SD card with Noobs - freshly setup and freshly installed. Oh, and I've also followed the instructions to reflash the firmware. The result is always the same, and I'm out of ideas.

So what's the result? Well, the screen stays black and the red and green lights are solidly on. No blinking. Nothing. Solid lights and no action at all.

What should I try next?

Can you tell us exactly how you setup the SDCARD?

Exactly as instructed, I think! I used the instructions on this site (https://projects.raspberrypi.org/en/pro ... tting-up/3) and I downloaded the latest NOOBS image. No dice!

I assumed no prior knowledge (although I have quite a bit), and did exactly what I was told using the latest versions of all applicable software.

The machine I used is a Mac.

I would suggest downloading a copy of the raspbian image

https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/raspbian/

and then use etcher to flash the image directly on the SD card.

Cards 64 Gbyte or larger normally get formatted as exFAT. If putting NOOBS on such a card that must be changed to FAT32 before copying the NOOBS files to it. https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... matting.md

All this could have been found out when you would have read the boot problem sticky, you can find in both beginners & troubleshooting.

start reading it when you have boot problems, it should the first thing to mention when still wanting to post afterwards that you have read it, and used the knowledge in it.

@drgeoff
I know. Although I have considerable experience as a software developer, experience with Linux, and experience with Raspberry Pi since the very first model, I (as I said) treated the Raspberry Pi 4 as if I knew nothing and followed the instructions exactly. This includes formatting to FAT, using SD Card Formatter as instructed (even though normally I'd use the command line).

@mahjongg
I know this too. I didn't post the question here because I couldn't be bothered to do any investigation myself.
