No audio passthrough (DTS) on Pi 4

Wed Sep 04, 2019 6:07 pm

Hello,

I can't get audio passthrough in Kodi (in system settings > audio, there is a "passthrough" section, but it is empty, nothing to enable in it) nor in VLC (the receivere gets stereo when I select "stereo mode > original", whatever audio device I choose).

Pi 4 (2 GB), official HDMI cable in left HDMI port (I get video but no audio at all when using the other port), latest raspian, kodi 17.6. I'm not using "sync playback to display".

The same video file plays fine with DTS passthrough from a kodi (older version) android player connected to the same home cinema on the same HDMI port.

Here is my current config.txt:

Code: Select all

hdmi_force_hotplug=1
hdmi_group=1
hdmi_mode=16
hdmi_ignore_cec_init=1
dtparam=audio=on
no_hdmi_resample=1
hdmi_stream_channels=1
[pi4]
dtoverlay=vc4-fkms-v3d
max_framebuffers=2
[all]
gpu_mem=256
What should I try?

Thasnks!

Not sure if these entries in kodi.log are to be expected:

I can't get audio passthrough in Kodi (in system settings > audio, there is a "passthrough" section, but it is empty, nothing to enable in it)...
Just switch to Expert mode...

Yes, expert mode enabled (the passthrough section is shown, but empty).
Thanks

Yes, expert mode enabled (the passthrough section is shown, but empty).
Thanks
So I think this only works in LibreELEC right now. Currently lot of feature is missing from Kodi if you on Raspbian.

As stated ad-infinitum the version of Kodi in the Raspbian Buster repositories is not yet optimised for the Raspberry Pi SBC.

There are various posts regarding "unofficial" releases of latest Kodi release.

Though at present as you rightly concluded LibreElec is the best option.

Thanks for suggesting LibreElec; as this is a "Just enough OS" for Kodi, does this mean that it will be harder to install other things on the Raspberry? I'm currently using samba server, NTFS, ExFAT, jdownloader, Wi-Fi routing (Acces Point), and much more coming, and I'd like to be able to use occasionally GUI Linux applications as well (VLC…)
Or should I try unofficial Kodi 18 ports for raspbian? Which? (I would have thought that these would be less optimized for raspberry…)
Thanks!

Well, that's why I'm using two RPi4. The LibreELEC is just a read-only system image, with Kodi as a main user interface.

I installed Kodi 18.4 from https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 1#p1530531, and passthough and hardware decoding are now working :)
There are some other issues with this build (it only works with the confluence skin, and leave me in a text terminal on exit), but I hope this will soon be fixed!
