58°C for a Pi4 4Gb good or not ...

Tue Aug 27, 2019 10:24 pm

So I'm getting crazy with my Pi 4. I've 2, one with 2Gb and 1 with 4 Gb.

I updated the firmware, put an heatsink ( https://www.pi-shop.ch/raspberry-pi-4-heatsink)

the card is in official Rasp case. the power supply is the official one.
the case is open (without the top)

nothing is running on top of rasperian ... but the temp is 58°C ....

the heatsink seams hot ... so I don't know ... is it hot or not. maybe it's normal and I overreacting..

ExplainingComputers used the same heat sink, and got 48C at idle:

Did you update your Pi?
Do:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
Sudo apt upgrade
Sudo apt full-upgrade
You should have the latest firmware and it should run at below 48c with that heat sink and case at idle.

Also check if your CPU is running at 0% load at idle.

Third, did you mess with overvoltage settings, or overclocking?

58C is normal for me when Chromium is running, <54C when Chromium not running YouTube.
I can get it higher when doing big compiles 63C

There was a boot EEPROM update that is supposed to save 300mw.
I think it made about a 5C lower difference on my two Pi4's.
With that mod temperature seems to be a good indicator of how hard the CPU'GPU is working.

Or try lowering arm and GPU idle frequency by a hundred megahertz or two, and undervolt the CPU in /boot/config.txt

See if that helps some.

That sounds like a fairly normal temperature for a Pi 4 to me. Nothing really to worry about.

58°C looks normal, mine at an ambient temperature of 28°C and Pibow Coupé 4 Ninja + the same heat sink as your - idle temperature is 63°C. I do not have any new firmware installed.

I think people are obsessing too much about the temperatures on the Pi4. Youtubers are showing off giant tower coolers with heat pipes and fans. It's goofy. There was a problem in the release EEPROM. Update it as per https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 7&t=246027

If you are getting 58C at idle, it sounds like you didn't apply the EEPROM patch.

I test heat with the "stress" utility. "apt install stress" to install. "stress -c 4 -t 3600" will peg all 4 cpus for an hour and soak the board and heat sink.

With one of those $2 Pi heat sinks on, I hit about 70C. With a bigger salvaged motherboard heat sink from an old PC, I hit around 65C. I'm not worried about either of those temps.

This post from a Raspberry Pi Engineer, made a few hours prior to your question, seems to contain relevant information:

A Pi (any model) without any sort of cooling will not fail through 'overheating'. It will simple throttle itself to cool itself down if it get too hot. This mean that cooling solutions are not 'critical'.

btw. I have a question whether during update && upgrade it will update the system with new firmware, bootloader etc.?
Do I still have to follow the steps described BeauSlim?

There is supposed to be an update to the packages which means that from some time today apt upgrade will update the firmware in EEPROM too.

My RPi4B-4G has been idling all day today with an ambient of 28C.... and the CPU temp hovers over 36C to 38C

am using fan equipped armor case designed for RPi4B....implementing same mods that I've used on the RPi3B/RPi3B+ version....
without mods.... CPU temp hovers over 43C to 45C while idling.....

however some distros label 40C to 50C as "optimal temperature"
"Don't come to me with 'issues' for I don't know how to deal with those
Come to me with 'problems' and I'll help you find solutions"

Some people be like:
"Help me! Am drowning! But dont you dare touch me nor come near me!"
