YouTube Videos in Chromium not Working on Raspberry Pi 4 B 4GB

Sat Aug 17, 2019 1:40 pm

Many videos in Chromium are not working. The entire browsing window becomes black when you play a video, but you can hear the sound. I have the most updated Raspbian Buster upgraded with dist-upgrade, and have rebooted. I use two monitors with Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 4GB RAM, and GL (Fake KMS) desktop driver. The videos in Chromium used to work with earlier versions of Buster except that they didn't always work on Twitter. Now the videos doesn't work in e.g. YouTube and IMDB.

Here is an example of a video that does work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDeAB31eNdk

Here is an example of a video that doesn't work (browser window becomes black): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Wl0cCVSpyQ

Sometimes the video shows, but is one color and striped (and perhaps magnified).

I have tried with h264ify both enabled and disabled, but no difference.

On Raspberry Pi 4, do you need h264ify? or does it not improve anything on Pi 4?

Could someone please confirm if you also have this problem, or does this work for you?

How much GPU RAM do you have enabled? Both videos work fine here.

I have 64 MB GPU RAM. Should I increase?

Edit: I increased to 128 MB GPU RAM and now both videos work here too.

I still wonder if h264ify is an advantage on Pi 4, or not.

128 should be enough, although I'd try 256 just to be on the safe side.

I had these issues, too, and also with VLC player. If you have overclocked the cpu and gpu in your pi, try lowering the gpu frequency. I had mine set at 600 mhz and lowered it to 550 and all my videos started working. I did not have to allocate additional gpu memory. Hope this helps.

I've set GPU memory to 128 MB and have not overclocked anything, and video works now. There is some lag (or uneven frame rate) in VLC for some videos compared to OMXPlayer (e.g. the built-in demo video), but that is perhaps not related to GPU memory.

I face both issue with video on Chromium browser and VLC. This happened right after today's update (including the 5.4 kernel).

FYI, I do update my system everyday. So this can definitely narrow down the issue to just today's update.

Since i'm relatively to Linux and Raspberry Pi, do let me know what info you need to know in order to deal with this issue.

Thank you in advance.
Raspberry Pi OS (32-bit) with desktop and recommended software
Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 8GB at stock speed (never overclock)

Never overclock your Pi.
Encourage optimization instead.

Same issue here.... Problem is none of the suggested options is working!

Everything got messed up after the latest update (here's a link to my thread):

viewtopic.php?f=28&t=280514&p=1699281#p1699281

Am i now forced to reinstall Pi OS?

I removed any overclocks
I set the gpu_mem to the suggested amount.

Full screen video does work (terribly i might add) when hardware acceleration is turned off in Chromium.

Please help!
