YouTube Videos in Chromium not Working on Raspberry Pi 4 B 4GB

Sat Aug 17, 2019 1:40 pm

Many videos in Chromium are not working. The entire browsing window becomes black when you play a video, but you can hear the sound. I have the most updated Raspbian Buster upgraded with dist-upgrade, and have rebooted. I use two monitors with Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 4GB RAM, and GL (Fake KMS) desktop driver. The videos in Chromium used to work with earlier versions of Buster except that they didn't always work on Twitter. Now the videos doesn't work in e.g. YouTube and IMDB.

Here is an example of a video that does work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDeAB31eNdk

Here is an example of a video that doesn't work (browser window becomes black): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Wl0cCVSpyQ

Sometimes the video shows, but is one color and striped (and perhaps magnified).

I have tried with h264ify both enabled and disabled, but no difference.

On Raspberry Pi 4, do you need h264ify? or does it not improve anything on Pi 4?

Could someone please confirm if you also have this problem, or does this work for you?

How much GPU RAM do you have enabled? Both videos work fine here.

I have 64 MB GPU RAM. Should I increase?

Edit: I increased to 128 MB GPU RAM and now both videos work here too.

I still wonder if h264ify is an advantage on Pi 4, or not.

128 should be enough, although I'd try 256 just to be on the safe side.

I had these issues, too, and also with VLC player. If you have overclocked the cpu and gpu in your pi, try lowering the gpu frequency. I had mine set at 600 mhz and lowered it to 550 and all my videos started working. I did not have to allocate additional gpu memory. Hope this helps.

I've set GPU memory to 128 MB and have not overclocked anything, and video works now. There is some lag (or uneven frame rate) in VLC for some videos compared to OMXPlayer (e.g. the built-in demo video), but that is perhaps not related to GPU memory.

I face both issue with video on Chromium browser and VLC. This happened right after today's update (including the 5.4 kernel).

FYI, I do update my system everyday. So this can definitely narrow down the issue to just today's update.

Since i'm relatively to Linux and Raspberry Pi, do let me know what info you need to know in order to deal with this issue.

Thank you in advance.
Raspberry Pi OS (32-bit) with desktop and recommended software

Never overclock your Pi.

Same issue here.... Problem is none of the suggested options is working!

Everything got messed up after the latest update (here's a link to my thread):

viewtopic.php?f=28&t=280514&p=1699281#p1699281

Am i now forced to reinstall Pi OS?

I removed any overclocks
I set the gpu_mem to the suggested amount.

Full screen video does work (terribly i might add) when hardware acceleration is turned off in Chromium.

Please help!

Most YouTube videos are playing. Free Movies on YouTube are not playing. The following message is displayed:

"Your browser does not currently recognize any of the video formats available.

Could you post a link for a "free movie" on YouTube that does not play correctly for you. Everything I have watched plays correctly. Fullscreen YouTube, Netflix, Disney + all work just fine....

I certainly encountered the "colour bar" messed up display right after upgrading my 4B 8GB. However, an rpi-update to a newer kernel and a second reboot resolved it and I have had no further video issues.

on this RPi4B-4G, I watched the "video the doesn't work" (screenshot below)

am still using previous kernel though.... and have not made any updates and upgrades yet.....

Code: Select all

I watch a lot of videos on this RPi4B, just recently the 52-part series Ghost of Tsushima by theRadBrad.

Same here , on RasPI-4B 2 GB, Youtube (and other) videos run smoothly & without tearing° in Chromium.
Like LTolledo I have NOT upgraded the kernel (put on hold) but I did the other, non-kernel, updates/upgrades.

° Note : I'm using the (non-standard on Pi) "compton" screen compositor, which some have advertised is helping avoid screen "tearing" while playing video - though I'm unsure it really matters, but OP those Posters having problems could try that also, in isolation or after reverting to the 4.79.118 linux kernel.

Just watched the wild board hunting video... plays fine and that was with 23 other tabs open (researching a couple of topics plus reading the Pi forums).

As mentioned previously, my setup is a fully up to date Raspberry Pi OS (32bit) Lite + MATE, with Marco (Compton GPU Compositor) enabled.

Code: Select all

bj@devnull:~ $ uname -a
Linux devnull 5.4.51-v7l+ #1329 SMP Wed Jul 29 10:26:41 BST 2020 armv7l GNU/Linux
