Raspberry Pi 3+ 55 degree idle

Sat Aug 10, 2019 5:17 pm

I left my Pi 3B+ to idle for about 15 minutes and when I came back it was at 55 degrees.
The only background tasks that might use CPU were pt-device-manager and LXPanel.
My Pi was booted to GUI.

The load averages were 0.19, 0.22, 2.32

Is 55 degrees normal for and idle temperature on the 3B+?

For Pi 3B, not plus, in official case, I would say idle CPU temp is 20-30 deg. C over ambient temperature.
AFAIK 3B+ runs hotter.

Buster in a WD case (no fans or heatsink) with a 500Gb drive via USB next to it I'm getting 33 C - 40 C - It is cool here (evening time) and I do have a draft from the window being open but the case is basically a box with the only vents being out of the draft.

The box is not busy - Apache running but not serving any pages, MY/SQL running but no access and MQTT broker just sitting there.
Loading is 0.09 0.24 0.13

33 degree idle with cooling, same conditions

I would think you will loose a little bit of air flow from the pi-top 3 case - from what I remember its a solid box (though do not like that green).

Maybe a spike in CPU not picked up the averages?

My 3B+ in a closed case with no heatsink or fan is idling around 53C.

Managed to get mine to 51C now with zero load (0.00 0.01 0.00) after 40 minutes with htop running over SSH.

I've fastened the lid on properly so I assume a draft was getting in - the magnetic catches on this box are not great
