Raspberry Pi Zero W - Wifi issues

Hello!

First of all, I re-read a ton of information on this issue and haven’t found a single solution anywhere, I hope someone from the official forum can help me, I really hope.

Problem: I have a Raspberry Pi Zero W version 1.1 and a Kingston 8Gb SD card. The image of the operating system is the "Buster" from the official site - the light version.
To record SD card I am using latest version of Etcher under Mac OS Mojave. After that I am adding two files: "ssh" and "wpa_supplicant.conf".

First problem - UART CLI is not working. To solve this problem I am editing the file config.txt in boot section of SD card. Changes consist of adding a line

enable_uart=1
. After that i can connect to RPi via UART (screen /dev/cu.SLAB_USBtoUART 115200) in terminal and login.

After that I stumble upon the biggest problem: I run the raspi-config, select the second item "Network options" and than "N2 WiFi" and after that I see "No wireless interface found".

I am sure that wifi work was before, and I absolutely do not understand what could be the problem. I tried all the operating systems that were before, anyway, wifi did not work anywhere.

I am getting the same problem on a Raspberry Pi Zero W 1.1. Raspbian Buster Lite version July 2019.

I think the latest Raspbian has broken wifi. Same results as above.

Unless you NEED buster for something? Perhaps look at using Stretch for now as thats tried and tested,
Give it a few weeks till the usual distro upgrade path is tested and recommended before shifting to Buster,
Buster is only NECESSARY if running on a Pi4..
With regular Pi4 centric fixes going on atm the backward compatibility required for a Pi-0 may experience a few hicups, its an understandable consequence of a broad project scope and focus on the current h/w where more issues are occuring ..

Wait until the 'sands settle' and you can upgrade to buster with an apt-get command and a lil wait rather than performing a fresh install of everything.

After all you may find further Buster issues with s/w systems you want to use too,

I just tried the last two recent releases of stretch lite and I get the same issue.

2019-04-08 and 2018-11-13

The board is flashed correctly, no additional hardware etc. It is definitely a pi zero w 1.1.

No wlan0 interface. I'll try the full release of stretch now.

Yep same issue. raspbian-2019-04-09 full, ifconfig -a shows no wlan interface.

Can you try the following:

0) Power off and power on the access point and router you are trying to connect to - do not miss this step even if the family get annoyed :lol:
1) Create a Stretch Lite image (with ssh file if needed)
2) Boot and using either SSH or the keyboard / monitor run

sudo raspi-config
Set the host name to something different from any computer on your network (2/N1)
Set the Wifi details (2/N2)
Set the Locale and WIFI country (3/ ALL OF THEM)
Finish and reboot when prompted
Do not miss any of the Locale options even if you do not change anything
Do not change anything else

Is it a hidden SSID you are trying to connect to? These do give the Pi boards problems and do not really add anything to security!
If so you will need to

sudo nano /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
add

scan_ssid=1
on the line after the SSID entry INDENT it to match the lines above and below - DO NOT change anything else, do not add anything else, save the file and reboot (sudo reboot - not pull the power)

If possible turn 5Ghz off while testing :o

Can you detail what type of network you are trying to connect to (WPA / WPA2 etc) and what channel the network is on
