Upgrade Distribution Failure

Sun Aug 04, 2019 8:03 pm

Hello,

I'm very new at this. I have Raspbian (Stretch) which I attempted to upgrade as follows:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
sudo apt-get autoclean

Then I rebooted. On reboot all I got was a black screen with a partial window header at the top of the screen titled 'Unnamed Window'.

I cannot close the window or do anything else.

Where do I go from here?

Thanks

What model Pi?
After rebooting, did it show a Raspberry Pi logo (or multiple)?
Can you use CTRL + ALT + F1 to get to a text terminal?

Kingston 32 GB C10 (U1) microSD
Sceptre E225W 22" 75hz 1080p monitor
Flash drive for backups and swap

Yes, and they are trying to upgrade to Buster from Stretch.

The OP can not upgrade from Stretch to Buster using those steps, see:

How do you know? There is nothing in the single post from @raspbian_beginner to indicate that.

I assumed that from this text:

True, they didn't say that is what exactly they are doing, and they may be trying to update. But that's what I initially thought.

Hi

Thanks for everyone's comments. Yes I was trying to upgrade from Stretch to Buster. What I did do was the standard upgrade process I described. BUT what I should have done first is (see https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/buster ... -raspbian/)

"In the files /etc/apt/sources.list and /etc/apt/sources.list.d/raspi.list, change every use of the word “stretch” to “buster”."

It doesn't look like I can reverse anything or change any files a this point so it'll be a reinstall.

Thanks again.

Going from one release to another has never been recommended, especially without creating a back up first...
