Video lags in VLC (Raspbian Buster) in Raspberry Pi 2

I installed a fresh image of Raspbian Buster in my Raspberry Pi 2.

When I run the Big Buck Bunny video in VLC (both in full screen and window mode), the video lags. As far as I can remember, this did not happen in Stretch.

However, when I play it from OMXPlayer it does not lag anymore.

How to solve this issue?

I would like to open a bug report in GitHub. Which repository should I refer to?

Are you using the .h264 file in /opt/vc or a proper download of Big Buck Bunny from somewhere else?

Not a bug then, just a change in VLC's behaviour. That file is just a video bitstream without a container, so VLC has no FPS information, causing that stutter. If you stick it into a container, it should play as it did before.

I did not really understand what you mean by container, but the file lags in VLC both when running in a window and in full screen mode.

The short version is that it's a bad file. A 'real' .mkv file (for example) will work.

If it is a bad file, is there a github repository where I can open a bug report?

The file is fine for the purpose it's meant for. The program in the directory demonstrates the pi's ability to decode h264 data. That's all it is and that's all it does. Its not meant to be played by other media players. There is no issue to report.

Well, the version of VLC currently shipped is supposed to have proper hardware acceleration. That is why I opened the thread.
I will play some other video and report what happens.
