Pi 4 2 Go fried a new SD card

Tue Jul 02, 2019 12:21 pm

Hello,
Sunday I installed my new Pi4 2Go. it is headless, without any screen attached and a new Sandisk Ultra 16Go card
My configuration stopped as SSH & VNC it.

I tried to activate the 4K output in the idea to have a better VNC resolution. was not working I stopped there and stop the Pi

Monday, I put my Pi in the official Pi case I received, I turn back on the Pi, let him running alone for 4 to 5 hours, come back and was surprised I cannot reach it.... the case was extremely hot and smelling burn.... I unplug the USB-C cable and try to open it. I notice that the SD is fried ... literally with a brun spot on it. if I put it on any reader on a desktop , a Pi or anything it's become directly really hot ( cannot touch it...)

1°/I read the thread with the new firmware to reduce the heat but is it the same case here...
2°/Is the Pi defect and I risk to kill another SD card...?

Counterfeit card maybe(?).

(So far, no one else has reported that kind of trouble.)

Should be does not mean it is. Where did you get it from?

Yeah counterfeits have a habit of working fine until you over write the actual space trying to write to fictitious (reported) space.

a burnspot on a SD card itself without any apparent heat damage to the pi in which it was loaded would indicate the card as being faulty. also a dodgy chinese 32gb? sd card failed in the same way in my phone..

A bad card can pass through QC too i guess..

A failed card bought recently from a reputable supplier should be covered by warranty and be replaced without too much hassle.
