Raspberry PI 256mb vs 512mb?

Can I tell if I have a 512mb Model B without booting the Raspberry PI.

yes. the ram chip says (big square chip in the center)
k4p2g324ed = 256mb
k4p4g324eb = 512mb

note the emphasis on the 4g vs 2g which stands for 4gigabit and 2gigabit respectively.

The model A only has 1 USB port and no Ethernet port, whereas the model B has 2 USB ports and has an Ethernet port.

Yes, correct, but what has this to do with the question? :roll:

Also, (on another but related matter), there are not just one, but two "model B revision 2's", (with the mounting holes) those with 256MB and those with 512MB!

In other words, that its a revision 2 board isn't a guarantee it has 512MB, as for a short while they were made with just 256MB.

How does one tell if they have one of the beta boards without the samsung chips?

All the beta boards were 256MB. They have the "2G" about in the middles of the part number.
