Updated to Buster, working on 3b+ not on 4.

Wed Jun 26, 2019 9:19 pm

Hi,
So I tried updating stretch to buster and everything seems to be working on raspberry pi 3b+.

However when I put the same SD card in raspberry pi 4 it doesn't do anything, just red led not green.

Then I tried different SD card with fresh install of buster and it worked normally.

That makes me believe that the first SD card didn't update properly, which list of packages confirms.

First two packages of fresh install of buster:

Code: Select all

adduser/testing,now 3.118 all [installed]
adwaita-icon-theme/testing,now 3.30.1-1 all [installed,automatic]
And of updated install:

Code: Select all

adduser/stable,now 3.115 all [installed]
adwaita-icon-theme/stable,now 3.22.0-1+deb9u1 all [installed,automatic]
I've followed your instructions to update and there is no more updates available.

If anybody has any idea what could be wrong?
Thanks for help.

Did you do a "sudo apt dist-upgrade" ?

"uname -a" will give you kernel version, probably wont work until that one is up-to-date at least.

Also "dpkg -l | grep raspberry" will give you a list of the most critical packages for hardware compatibility. ( i think )

Thanks for the reply.

Yes I did dist-upgrade.

Uname -a shows 4.19.50-v7+ #896 on updated system
And 4.19.50-v71+ #895 on fresh install.

Dpkg list is the same on both, everything has version 1.20190620

Check that all the firmware files were updated in /boot i.e. *.dat *.elf *.bin etc.

The file names and size of the directory seems to be the same.

Is there any specific way I should check them?

Hmm.

Code: Select all

However when I put the same SD card in raspberry pi 4 it doesn't do anything, just red led not green.
Suggests to me that it's failing very early in the boot process, so a problem with the firmware, dtb, overlay files or something else in /boot.
Once that gets loaded you should start to see a green led and error messages for anything else.

Okay, thanks, but how should I fix it?

You could in theory copy all the files in "/boot" from the working card to the non-working card.

If you want to be really helpful you could also do "ls -laR /boot > bootpart.txt" on both cards and post the output it on some pastebin site and leave the links here. If there is a bug in one of the firmware packages this might be helpful to anyone trying to fix it.

Also check if the boot-partition is full and see if that might be the reason. "df -h /boot"

Df -h shows 58% so that's not the problem.

Here are the lists of /boot if anybody would need them:

Updated card:

Fresh install card:

I've got bad experience from blindly copying directories so I am not gonna do that  I've already mostly set up the new card so it doesn't matter. I appreciate the help.
