New firmware, no more boot (PI3B, PI3B+, 2B) PI Zero is ok

Tue Jun 25, 2019 9:22 am

Hello

This morning I launch rpi-update on four headless and far away RPIs : 3B+, 3B, an old 2B.and a Zero.

3B+ 3B and 2B won't get up anymore...
Zero is ok and get back fast.

Is this a new issue with the last firmware ?

I think I have to download the penultimate on the /boot ?
Is there any documentation explaining this ?

First time ever had issue with Raspberry PI....
:o

Thanks a lot

We absolutely do NOT recommend running rpi-update unless you have a specific reason to do so. It downloads untested and possibly unreliable testing firmware and kernel.

I didn't get that before.

Is there any chance to recover by downgrading to other firmware ?

Yes, you need to use older firmware. Download a Raspbian install and grab the data from that?

rpi-update breaks the load. It somehow deletes the start.elf file.
One more thing: Pi starts to work very unstable and slow, and no matter which firmware you have. Even if you rollback to previous kernel, it will work slow and unstable.
I had one more SD card, so I just replaced everything from /boot partition but cmdline.txt and config.txt.
After that I booted successfully and performed "apt-get install --reinstall raspberrypi-kernel" to update very old kernel 4.14 to Raspbian 4.19.42 from APT repository. It works.
I played around with update to other version (not latest), and I am sure that problem is with updater itself.
