HDMI Input for Pi 3

Hey!
This summer I'm looking to start a project in which a device can split 2 input devices (via HDMI) and then display these 2 displays on one single screen output on some form of split screen option, which could be configured with a remote control.
However, I am struggling to find a good solution for HDMI input on the raspberry pi, the only solutions I have found are £70 HDMI converters, I am looking for a cheaper option, if anybody has any advice I would love to hear it.

Cheapest is normally a USB device but you need to check it will work with Raspbian

HDMI carries uncompressed video. That is more than 200Mbit/s for standard definition and around 1 Gbit/s for HDTV. The USB sub-system of a RPi cannot handle the latter and will be hard pressed by the former.

I guess now with the Pi 4 this is becoming relevant again. It would be so awesome to use a Raspberry Pi 4 as a capture device and USB3 should be plenty for 1080p at 30 frames, shouldn't it?
