Hi,

I got nl80211 USB wireless module for my older RPI-1 model B, and I cannot get it working. RPI runs Stretch lite version of 2018-10-09.
lsusb reports device as `0bda:f179' Realtek Semiconductor.

I tried this config with with either `ra0' or `wlan0' interface names

Code: Select all

# /etc/network/interfaces.d/wlan0
auto lo wlan0

iface lo inet loopback
iface eth0 inet dhcp

iface wlan0 inet dhcp
   wpa-ssid "MySSID"
   wpa-psk "MyPassword"
I am getting `error device not found, wpa_supplicant does not support...', frequetly asked here.
I read through the list here and tried some of the suggetsions, but did not work so far for me.

What do I miss in the config?

Many thanks in advance.

Tomas

Have you set the country?

Hi,

Yes, I copied over my wpa config from RPI3.

Code: Select all

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1
country=CZ

network={
	ssid="TP-LINK_DFB400"
	psk="topsecret"
	key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}

And adjusted interfaces.d

Code: Select all

# /etc/network/interfaces.d/wlan0
auto lo wlan0
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet dhcp
iface wlan0 inet dhcp

Hi,

Having read the sticky note anbout WiFi Dongle, still no luck.

lsmod, only reports cfg80211, rfkill loaded, no `rlt8..' on the list of loaded modules.
`firmware-realtek' installed, no relatek module `rlt8...' loaded hence no `wlan0' created, probably.

lsusb onkly gives this info

Code: Select all

0bda:f179 Realtek Semiconductor.
Any ideas?
Many thanks
Tomas

I believe Raspbian Stretch does not include either firmware or driver.

MrEngman has written an easy install script, see:

Hi,

I have installed `8188eu.ko', from `8188eu-4.14.71-1145.tar.gz'. Module is not loaded on boot.
Running modprobe 8188eu loads the module, but still no `wlan0' device created.

Also it seems a module of similar name is part of Stretch install...
/lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8188efw.bin
/lib/firmware/rtlwifi/rtl8188eufw.bin

But yet, the dongle n802.11 is not recognised so far.

As fruitoftheloom stated, use Mr. Engman's script, works like charm for Realtek RTL88xx chips.
viewtopic.php?f=63&t=178405 second post.
The following will be all you have to do.

Code: Select all

sudo wget http://www.fars-robotics.net/install-wifi -O /usr/bin/install-wifi
sudo chmod +x /usr/bin/install-wifi
sudo install-wifi

Hi,

Thank you. I tried downloading manually first as that is the last update. I have also looked in the script suggested around option -c, standing for check. The script is nicely written.

-c option performs this check, it pipes the output of lsusb to grep -i checking for particular drive no:id. Mine is `0bda:f179' which is unfortunattely not on the list.
