3 B+ Shutdown and Reboot Issues

Mon Sep 17, 2018 10:33 am

I have spent the last week reading forums and experimenting with distro's to no avail. Basically I want to setup a smart home app called OpenHab on either a USB stick or SSD drive. I have been able to get Raspberry 2's to boot from external devices in the past, with no SD-CARD but the 3 B+ seems very temperamental. I have used Stretch Lite and written to external device using Etcher. Each time I can go through the boot process and install just fine. The problem comes when I do a controlled shutdown or reboot. Either I will get error messages and a hang during shutdown or a reboot just won't come back again.

There seems to be a lot a forum posts about different firmware on the 3B+ and even some comments about bluetooth. If I can determine what needs to be done to make the system work properly I will be able to install openhab knowing that a reboot isn't going to cause the system to fail.

I have a micro usb card (128 gb SANDISK) and also a Samsung EVO SSD which has separate power input in addition to the USB connection.

Any advice most welcome.

Can you try installing again from the start? This time don't do any update and upgrade.
See if the problem persist.

If that is OK, then start adding your favorite packages/apps.
Then re-start again.

If that worked fine, then make an image backup of your "good" setup.
Once you have backed up your "good" setup, try doing update and upgrade.

If after update and upgrade the shutdown and/or reboot problems re-appear, restore from your backed-up image.

I just reflashed the ssd with the clean download of stretch lite. It boots up fine from the ssd (no sd card) and I can logon ok. If I try either

sudo shutdown -r now

or

sudo reboot

the image scrolls to quickly for me to see what is being said and then the tv signal dies so I can see nothing

the pi lights all go out as if I had done a shutdown.

When I power up again I notice it does a disk check which makes me think that the shutdown was not clean.

I will now upgrade and retry.

This is odd, the red LED must not turn off during shutdown.

well, I have encountered this before.
When you do upgrade use this command

Code: Select all

: ~ $ sudo apt-get full-upgrade
once the upgrade is finished, shutdown the RPi. The red LED MUST remain ON.
The red LED will only turn off once the power from the microUSB port is removed (unplugged, or power from the AC mains of the PSU is cut).

I have several Raspberry Pi's running various methods of booting/system drive configurations. Whenever I do updates (and any other time I need to shut them down), the first command I issue is:

sudo sync

then the update/upgrade commands, then ANOTHER "sudo sync", then shutdown 0. I have NEVER had a corrupt SD, SSD, or Flash drive.

Perhaps this might help others!

Ok - after some progress I decided to try openHab again and I made sure to do all the updates - upgrades and full upgrades.

The reboot appeared to work fine and so I was about to declare it working and did a sudo sync followed by a sudo shutdown now and this appeared on the console.

(see attached)

actually a couple of mins passes and it repeats the information so it's not shutdown now.

I tried a reboot and this flashed something similar to the previous screen dump and then provided me with a empty screen with a cursor in the top left. If left it for 5-10 mins to see if something was going to time out and allow the reboot to complete.

HOWEVER - I then noted that the pi was displaying a thermometer symbol at the top right of the screen and was becoming very hot.

I powered off immediately.

Not sure what the error means in the previous screen but it does appear to get the unit very very warm.

I don't think I would dare leave this unit unattended in case it did some auto update, tried to reboot and then had a meltdown.

It seems to be solved by the latest raspbian(1) and/or firmware(2) updates.
Never happened again during the last days.
