Headless Pi3 B+ USB Boot hangs in left USB ports

Hello All.

Inserting the boot USB into different USB ports on the B+ produces different results. Looking at the usb edge of the Pi, the ethernet socket is on the left, there's 2 usb ports in the center, and 2 usb ports on the right.

When the boot usb is inserted in one of the right side usb ports, everything works perfectly. Pi boots, ethernet connects, wifi AP is up. Nil issues. This is consistent boot after boot.

When the boot usb is inserted in the left usb ports, ethernet never connects, wifi AP is down. This is headless without monitor, so verifying the boot is tricky. Red/Green led activity is identical to a normal boot, ethernet leds remain off.

Here's the kicker, if I connect a hdmi monitor, it boots perfectly every time. If a keyboard or mouse is connected to either right side port, it boots perfectly.

Summary
- Boot usb in the upper left usb port
- Ethernet connected
- Nothing else connected = fail
- HDMI connected = boots ok
- HID device in any right usb port = boots ok

- 2 brand new pi's behave identically
- Clean install of raspbian-stretch-lite-2018-06-27
- The default image (no updates or changes) = same problem
- Updated using: sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade -y
- After updates = same problem
- Different usb drives tested
- Only happens on Pi3 B+, our systems on Pi3 B don't have these symptoms

This may seem trivial, but we have space constrained installs into Cinch HD housings, the boot usb must reside in the top left usb port.

Question: Are there steps I can take to make the top left USB port behave like the ones on the right?

May one ask what you are using for a power supply ? as the 3B+ is more power hungry than the 3B:

Power supplies I've used for these tests
- Official pi supply ex RS Components 5v 2.5amp (new current model)
- Official pi supply ex RS Components 5v 2.0amp (previous model)
- Laboratory bench supply 10.0amp rated
- Purpose built 4.5amp supplies, we use in our pi3 B machine controllers

All of these power supplies produce the same symptoms.

Hi All, some further testing shows the boot hangs when the usb is the left ports.

In /boot/config.txt -> uncomment hdmi_force_hotplug=1
Now I can plug a monitor in after starting the pi. I can see it hangs at approx 1.9025 while it's dealing with usb ports.

If the boot usb is in one of the left ports, it hangs here every time. If I plug a keyboard (or anything) into a right usb, the boot continues normally, and everything works fine. This is LOG NO1 below.

If the usb is in one of the right ports, it works correctly every time. This is LOG NO2 below.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

There is some new firmware that is supposed to fix some USB boot issues.

Thanks for the replies. I updated again this morining (same as yesterday: sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade -y).

Now Sandisk 32gb work about 1 in 5 boots, in the left usb ports.

But Sandisk 16gb work perfectly, every time, on any usb port now (tested multiple 16gb drives on two different Pi3 B+). The image gets reduced to 4gb anyway for fast cloning, so will stick with 16gb drives.

I was unable to find any difference in how my 3B+ USB boots, regardless of the port I used. However, I'm not using Ethernet at the moment, so that could be a factor.
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

Not that it would directly explain why it happens to you but left ports are different than right ports. On pi 3B+ there are two cascaded usb hubs. From Pi cpu usb goes to first hub with two right ports and second usb hub is connected to its third port. This second hub has two left ports and ethernet connected to its third port. So when booted from left ports the usb data go across two cascaded usb hubs and the device is connected to same hub as ethernet. While it should work (and it works perfectly for me, never noticed any difference between left and right ports with usb booting even with ethernet connected) it may be that this triggers some bug somewhere with your specific setup.

Tried replicating this with my USB HDD boot RPi3B+ with the latest Raspian Stretch Desktop

The USB HDD was plugged in the top left USB port
The logitech unifying receiver plugged in the bottom left USB port
Nothing on the right ports
It booted with both WiFi and Ethenet enabled, and with Ethernet connection only

Have you found any solution for this problem ?
I have the same symptoms. I have Rpi 3B+ with usb flash drive inserted in center USB port. Roughly one of five boots the Rpi3B+ doesn't start ethernet (no ethernet leds are on) and the flash drive is not present to the system. When I after that put usb keyboard on the right usb port the ethernet and flash drive starts working. I am using latest rasbian stretch packages.

I have tested it for 20 Rpi3B+ and all have the same symptoms. When the same image is on Rpi3B no issue is present and everything is ok.
It's not a power supply issue. I have tested it with original Rpi 2.5A power supply.
