Accessing web application on Pi through hostname or IP not possible from Android?

Wed Jun 20, 2018 2:06 pm

I've followed two different tutorials (https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... s-point.md and https://iotbytes.wordpress.com/python-f ... and-uwsgi/) to get a web application running on my Pi Zero W, and use the Pi as an access point (i.e. making it a portable access point which provides access to this webapp).

Accessing it works fine from my laptop (macOS 10.13) by accessing either http://<hostname>.local or http://192.168.4.1 (static IP as per the access point tutorial). However, while I can connect my Android phone (8.1) to the Pi's network, browsing to the IP address from a browser gives ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT, while entering the Pi's hostname does not resolve (ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED).

Is this a known issue and is there a solution, or is it something I've overlooked?

I would install "fing" on my phone to test that you really are on the same network and can actually access the IP you assume the Pi is on.

The .local name resolution is a bit special and may not work for Android.
