intalling updates

I am getting sort of a strange error message when I try to install updates. The message says there is not enough free disk space, and that I need an additional 48.2 M free space on disk '/boot.' I find this weird because it is a 32GB disk and the disk management tool shows there is ample space. Since the 'boot' partition is created by the image creating software, how can I make the boot partition larger?

Since what you describe does indeed sound strange, could you provide some background information to support a possible meaningful reply?
What Operating System is running on your RPi?
How exactly do you try to install updates?
What is the full text of the resulting error message?

And have you done anything out of the ordinary, like a custom kernel?

I get this problem when running Unbutu Mate and running the software update menu option. I work around it by by using synaptic instead and using the "mark all upgrades" button and then "apply" if any are found.
