[SOLVED] wlan1 (5GHz) does not come up

Sun Apr 22, 2018 9:23 am

I am using RPi3 with

Code: Select all

Linux FHEM 4.14.34-v7+ #1110 SMP Mon Apr 16 15:18:51 BST 2018 armv7l GNU/Linux.
I want to connect my RPi with a 2.4 as well as the 5GHz band. I am using the internal Wifi to connect to 2.4 GHz and this works fine. For the 5GHz I am using a USB-Adapt DWA-172. Because I was not sure I compiled the driver as it is described in
https://layereight.de/raspberry-pi/2016 ... 812au.html
Everything went fine, still wlan1 does not show up.

The USB is recognized, because dmesg says

Code: Select all

[    2.811446] usb 1-1.4: new high-speed USB device number 6 using dwc_otg
[    2.942544] usb 1-1.4: New USB device found, idVendor=2001, idProduct=3318
[    2.942564] usb 1-1.4: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
[    2.942573] usb 1-1.4: Product: 11ac adapter
[    2.942582] usb 1-1.4: Manufacturer: D-Link Corporation
[    2.942590] usb 1-1.4: SerialNumber: 00e04c000001
The network configuration is

Code: Select all

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet manual

allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet manual
    wireless-power off
    wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

allow-hotplug wlan1
iface wlan1 inet manual
    wireless-power off
    wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
and the wifi passwort is working as well:

Code: Select all

country=DE
ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1
network={
        ssid="WLAN-120954"
        scan_ssid=1
       psk="well_I_am_not_telling_here"
}
Does anyone has an idea what is wrong? Running iwconfig I get

Code: Select all

wlan0     IEEE 802.11  ESSID:"WLAN-120954"
          Mode:Managed  Frequency:2.437 GHz  Access Point: 00:87:33:51:00:35
          Bit Rate=54 Mb/s   Tx-Power=31 dBm
          Retry short limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality=45/70  Signal level=-65 dBm
          Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
          Tx excessive retries:0  Invalid misc:0   Missed beacon:0

lo        no wireless extensions.

eth0      no wireless extensions.

and no wlan1 shows up?! messages as well as kern.log do not say what is wrong.

Did the 5G/.ac dongle not work out of the box?
No idea but it'll be the driver as it's not seeing it properly I would guess.
lsusb sees it ?

A quick look and FHEM is just a package install over Raspbian OS ?

Thanks for your help. It DID work out of the box but after I upgraded kernel and system it stoped working. lsusb shows it:

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 006: ID 2001:3318 D-Link Corp.
FHEM is just a perl package that I installed over it, very straightforward.

(Or maybe simply the dongle is not working?)

I see the title change, what fixed it. Just so others who search, find this and need a solution know.

MrEngman has on his webpage an sh-file that I ran. This file did everything, installing the driver as well as activating it.

Unfortunately, I just realized that it is only with 2.4GHz, not 5GHz. I am sure that this is not a software issue.

Hi andies,

I am using the driver you are installing for your DWA-172 wifi, but I am using a Netgear A6100 wifi. I have it connected to a Pi 3B and it is using my 5GHz access point. The built in Broadcom wifi is connected at 2.4GHz. I also have another wifi, TP-Link TL-WN725N, connected to my Pi 3B running at 2.4GHz.

I also have a Edimax EW-7811UTC connected to a Pi 2B using the same driver running at 5GHz.

So shouldn't be a driver problem.

As you are running the latest kernel version, especially if you are using kernel Stretch, I'm wondering why you have edited file /etc/network/interfaces.

My /etc/network/interfaces file is

Code: Select all

# interfaces(5) file used by ifup(8) and ifdown(8)

# Please note that this file is written to be used with dhcpcd
# For static IP, consult /etc/dhcpcd.conf and 'man dhcpcd.conf'

# Include files from /etc/network/interfaces.d:
source-directory /etc/network/interfaces.d
and file /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf is

Code: Select all

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1
country=GB

network={
        ssid="AP-2.4GHz"
        psk="password"
        key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}

network={
        ssid="AP-5GHz"
        psk="password"
        key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
}

Don't I have to declare the usual "auto lo // iface lo inet loopback..." under stretch? I just used my old interfaces-file from the former version.

It'll creates an entry when it see the WiFi adaptor.
It does on mine for the adaptors I use.
