Two new RPI3 ' won't boot at all

Thu Apr 05, 2018 10:09 am

I bought two new Raspberry Pi 3 model B+ from Pimoroni last week.
I formatted a new SD card and turned power on. The red light blinks but the green light not. The HDMI shows only a color palette on the monitor (and one "lightning" sign). No boot up sequence ever comes up.
The same thing happened on the second RPI.

Just to be sure my sd card and power is ok I connected them to a third RPI 3 (bough six months ago). All worked fine and everything booted fine as expected.

There is no noticeable damage, scratching etc. My power source is 2.0A and has worked on many RPI that have been used on my desk.

I heard that a new model of RPI3 came up recently and there are some slight differences on general layout on the SBC to my 6 months old RPI3. Is there something I could tried. I've already tried a different PSUs to no avail.
I'd be surprised if both units were defective. I've handled dozens upon dozens of SBCs and these would be the first defective ones.

What software did you put on the card ? 3B+ need the latest release of OS as there have been changes in the hardware that means old versions will not work.

You probably got a version of NOOBS that doesn't support the 3B+ yet. If you want to install Raspbian, download the latest version, put it on your SD cards and all will be well.

I've got the problem solved. The new RPI does not seem to support previous linux distros. The new "stretch" distro is recognised. I was able to to install it.

But another problem rises: I installed the Raspbian Stretch Lite and proceeded to install a Gui to it as described on:
https://die-antwort.eu/techblog/2017-12 ... iosk-mode/
and
viewtopic.php?p=890408#p890408

I do not want to install the Noobs package as it has far too many unneeded programs and uninstalling them is a hassle. Above examples have worked before on Jessie but not anymore:
"sudo apt-get install --no-install-recommends xserver-xorg x11-xserver-utils xinit"
report that "xserver-xorg" is no longer available: I get:
"Unable to locate package xinit" etc

Is there an updated tutorial on how to install rasbian stretch lite and then minimal gui to it?

OK! Answering myself. It appears that rasbian servers were down or unavailable since after some waiting all upgrades and downloads succeeded.

It's not that a "new Pi" may not "support" an older Linux distro. but that the older Linux distro. may, or even will, not (be able) to support a "new Pi" (too many changes, and associated testing, needed). AFAIK, backwards support for all older Pi's is, currently, always provided in new releases of Raspbian**
Trev.
** Eg. see here: http://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi ... iPiTV.html
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's & P400. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

Install Raspbian Lite and use “sudo apt-get install“ followed by your preffered GUI package. Most (if not all) dependencies will get installed as well.
