RPi 3B+ Ethernet/USB Controller gets ultra hot

Wed Apr 04, 2018 9:51 pm

Hi

I just got my Raspberry Pi 3B+ today!
Everything works perfektly fine but I'm worried about the Ethernet/USB Controller ..
I used Sysbench to test the heatsink I also ordered for the CPU and it didn't exeed 70°C even after a few min @ 100% load. ;)
But the heatsink on the Ethernet Controller is boiling hot all the time and I have no idea why ..
On my Pi 3B it is just lukewarm to cold .. :?

best Regards

Julien

Does the ethernet and USB still work? Compared with the SoC, it should be cooler. Might depend on what you have plugged in to the USB?

Hmm, changed my mind. Just did a heat gun test on a 3B+, SoC idle (Desktop) and the ethernet/USB chip is slightly warmer at around 55degC, whilst the SoC is at about 48. The wireless chip is cooler than the rest of the board at 31degC.

If you are getting numbers wildly different to that whilst idle I would suspect a defective board.

Hey thanks for the reply!
Everything works perfectly fine!
I was just wondering about the temperature of the Ethernet Chip beeing higher than the SoC temperature
but it seems to be perfectly normal regarding to your picture.
