RPi 3 B+ Wifi not working

Mon Mar 26, 2018 1:19 pm

Hey all,
I am trying to set up a headless pi. It downloaded and flashed raspbian stretch today. After adding a wpa_supplicant.conf in /boot the unit didn't connect to the network. I was able to activate ssh though and am now connected via ethernet.

Code: Select all

iwlist wlan0 scan
returns:

Code: Select all

wlan0 Failed to read scan data : Network is down
The content of

Code: Select all

/etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
is:

Code: Select all

ctrl_interface=DIR=/var/run/wpa_supplicant GROUP=netdev
update_config=1
country=DE

network={
        ssid="xxx"
        psk="xxx"
}
looking for the wifi device over

Code: Select all

lsusb
gives:

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 004: ID 0424:7800 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:2514 Standard Microsystems Corp. USB 2.0 Hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:2514 Standard Microsystems Corp. USB 2.0 Hub
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Is the Hardware faulty?

The RPI3B+ wifi is connected via SDIO, not USB, so it won't be listed in lsusb.
There's some other threads about getting wifi working on a 3B+, involving rfkill, country codes and possible race conditions. The search box should turn them up.

seeing as you have access via a wired connection run

Code: Select all

sudo raspi-config
under localisation options select change wifi country and reboot, that should enable you wifi.

Then I suggest you try.

Code: Select all

sudo rfkill unblock wifi

without trying your suggestion I was able to resolve the issue by reflashing raspbian. I do wonder what went wrong, though! Thanks for the help anyway.

Glad you got it working.

If you edit /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf directly you need to run the rfkill command to unblock the wifi, if you place a copy of wpa_supplicant.conf in the small fat partition the same as you do when you enable ssh using the ssh.txt option and then boot your pi the wpa_supplicant.conf will be copied and assuming its all correct the wifi will be activated at the same time.

With me, not only is the passphrase case sensitive but the SSID as well. Be sure to follow CoRRecT capitalization of your SSID
