I updated to that new firmware yesterday as well.

On the plus side the Pi has not completely crashed. But I was running several applications inside a tmux session and I checked this morning and tmux was dead, including all the applications.

There is this message in the logs which is the only hint I can see:

I tried to get output from the screen before power cycling but there was no source detected when I hooked up the HDMI cable.

I have a IQaudio PiDAC+ hat attached to my pi, which I removed to see if that was causing the problem. Whilst I haven't had a crash like the last few days, it did slow down to a craw. The task manager showed that I'd used most of the memory, so I've been looking at the log files.
I have "ufw" installed and it's writing to the log file a report every 5-6 seconds! It reports a UFW BLOCK with a "DST=224.0.0.1", so I'm guessing this log file gets so big that I run out of space. Any one else have this too?

Up until yesterday I also had a USB hard drive connected (via a USB hub), and for troubleshooting purposes I removed it and so far I haven't had any crashes. It should be noted I've ever only used Wifi with my 3B+.

I would also like to point out some trouble shooting observations I have been noticing.

When using the full Raspbian Stretch 2018-03-13 image, all updates and most current rpi-update.

Booting to the GUI Desktop without the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ plugged into a router or ethernet switch the system seems to boot fine every time so far.

Booting to the GUI Desktop with the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ with the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ plugged into a router/ethernet switch crashes once in a while.

Using raspi-config to disable Desktop boot, but booting to text/command line login, but splash screen still enabled and Raspberry Pi 3 B+ plugged into ethernet port on router/ethernet switch the system crashes more often that when the GUI was enabled.

Using raspi-config to disable Desktop boot, having the system load to text/command line login, and having splash screen disabled and Raspberry Pi 3 B+ plugged into ethernet port on router/ethernet switch the system crashes every time on startup.

So not sure if that helps, but I notice a pattern here. :(

Sound like a race condition on ethernet driver startup. I think there is a bug fix in rpi-update that had some impact there, but might be misremembering.

Well as I had stated in previous post I had run rpi-update and here is the current string that the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ pops out at me when I login:

Sorry if this is the wrong topic to post to, but I'm stuck. My new B+ never gets to the ACT light, but I get a very deliberate pattern on the red status LED; four long flashes followed immediately by four short flashes, pause, then repeat. Input voltage to the 7704 PMIC is 4.98 volts, new burn of noobs that work fine on a B. I can't find any documentation of error codes on the RED LED. Thanks for anything you can offer!

The only information I have found myself about the Raspberry Pi RED Power LED blinking is when the voltage drops below 4.75V.

The Raspberry Pi 3 B and Raspberry Pi 3 B+ you should be using the official 2.5A 5V power supply. If you are using any other power supply that is not rated for 2.5A then you could be browning out when the Raspberry Pi 3 B+ is trying to pull more current than your PSU can handle.

Ignore for a moment the fact that it's the red LED flashing and not the green(*). A pattern of 4 long+4 short flashes says the platform is not supported by the image.

When you say it is a new NOOBS, when did you download it? Only the most recent (2018-03-14) image has support for the 3B+.

(*) Pin assignments change between models, so if the platform isn't recognised then it is possible that the wrong GPIO is being toggled. Specifically, the GPIO that drove the green ACT LED on the 3B now drives the red PWR LED on the 3B+.

Hi. I am having problems too with Pi 3 B+s. This is my first post here so please excuse any mistakes I may make. I hope it is OK to add to this thread rather than start a new one.

I had a Pi3b (not plus) that was successfully running as a server to backup machines on my network. It was running Backuppc and also as a destination for SimpleBackup (sbackup a Linux program). The Pi3b had a USB hard disk plugged into it to receive the backed up files. Once the 3B+ was released, I brought two of them. I updated my sd card with apt-get update, upgrade & dist-upgrade etc and it successfully updated to the latest version. I swapped the 3B for a 3B+. Booted. Except it didn't boot (flashing leds). I went back to the 3B and did a rpi-update. Swapped the 3B+ back in, and it booted OK.

Then the problems started.
Two distinct problems.
1) Backuppc failing with a "Broken Pipe" message. It communicates between the server and the machine via RSync/RSyncd. I *think* this problem is caused by no activity occurring over the connection between the client and server for a long while, and I think I have solved it by tweaking my setup to artificially limit the network transfer speed that backuppc's rsync is usuing, and tweaking settings to keep the connection alive. The problem only occured when doing a full backup of lots of files on two servers - a very slow and disk & network intensive process. This "fix" is not really a satisfactory one as the process was working fine on the 3B but now fails without the "fix" on the 3B+, machines that I brought specifically because they are faster.

2) Crash/Lockup. This seems to occur when a full server backup is occurring using SBackup. The Pi3B+ just dies. It happened to me twice since yesterday evening. On both occasions, the green and red lights on the pi were lit up, and the disk access light was lit on the USB drive, but the PI was completely unresponsive to pings or SSH. Again, this process used to work on the 3B. Again, this will be a processor and disk intensive task. Examining the log files, I can see no errors listed. The machine runs headless, so I don't see any problems on screen when it crashes, because there isn't one!

To try and fix this, I have regularly performed apt-get update, upgrade & dist-upgrade etc and rpi-update's. I have tried both of my Pi 3B+s. I have cloned the SD card (using the SD Card copier built in to Raspbian). I have bought a ventilated case with a fan to keep the pi's temperature low (now constantly below 40C according to "vcgencmd measure_temp"). I have also regularly performed a fsck on the sd card partitions, and the USB drive, each time there was a lock-up. I have even replaced the USB drive with a different bigger one with its own power supply. Every single component except the PSU has been swapped out for a different one. The PSU is an official Pi branded 2.5A one.

This morning, after the latest crash, I have tried the apt-get update, upgrade & dist-upgrade etc again (all were up-to-date) and rpi-update (which installed the latest version).

I was really glad to find this thread as it seems other people are having problems with disk and/or network intensive tasks. I'm really quite disappointed as the 3B+ was supposed to be faster (& "better"), but for my use, as far as I can see, is proving unreliable.
I don't really know what else I can try. Can anyone help?

An update: After adding "arm_freq=1200 and "sdram_freq=450" to config.txt, my Pi has been completely stable:

So that's great!

By the way: I'd be happy to make further changes or run a custom kernel or something to help debug the original problem, even if it introduces instability again.

Actually, you could comment out each of those settings individually to see if either one on its own is enough to make your 3B+ stable.

Can those values be incrementally increased for testing stability ?
We know arm frequency is 1400 by default, but what is the defualt for the sdram speed ?

If you want to try bisecting the two value to find the maximum safe value then go ahead. If you find that the Pi is sensitive to sdram_freq then you could try increasing over_voltage_sdram_p above the default of 2 to see if that increases stability.

You can find the defaults yourself by running "vcgencmd get_config int", which will tell you that "sdram_freq=500". Remember that those are the "turbo" values - the baseline is still 600 for the arm_freq and 400 for sdram_freq.

and I decided to turn off the GUI and turn off the splash screen to see if the system would do a kernel dump on boot and so far it is looking good. So far I have rebooted a few times with default config.txt file system is booting to command line. I will continue to test for stability.

Earlier in this thread I reported that I have two Pi 3 B+'s, one of which repeatedly freezes after a few minutes, even with "arm_freq=700". However after adding "arm_freq=1200 and "sdram_freq=450" to config.txt I have not seen any freezes yet. Right now I am trying with only "sdram_freq=450" and I have not seen a freeze yet.

Thanks - that's a very useful datapoint. Assuming that remains stable and you are prepared to experiment further, try with these settings:

sdram_freq=500
over_voltage_sdram_p=4
over_voltage_sdram_c=4
If that is also stable you can progressively lower the voltages individually until it fails.

Just did the rpi-update and the others to my pi3+ In the effort to overcome the nightly lockup. I am running the-script and really not over working it. See how it goes tonight....
