Chromium text to speech

Is there some way to enable text to speech on Chromium?
I am using the Node-RED dashboard audio out node. It delivers audio when viewed on my PC or Android phone but on the Pi I get a dialogue box appear for a couple of seconds showing " Computer says... x" where x is the payload sent to the audio out node.
Is there an extension I can add to fix this? I want to stick with Chromium as I need a chrome log in for other aspects of my system.
