512 MB Pi GUI hangs with new Memory Split

Thu Oct 18, 2012 11:54 am

Hi all,

I have just received one of the new 512MB Pis. I followed the links to download and copy in a 384MB memory split file, replacing start.elf.
The Pi boots up fine, but when I enter startx it just hangs. Screen goes black, disconnects Putty session, and Pi has to be rebooted.
I tried with the mmc version of 384 MB memory split and the pre mmc version.
startx loads the GUI fine with old start.elf. I just can't access the extra 256MB of memory.

I was running with Turbo overclock, but have turned that off. Does not fix problem.

Does anyone have a solution? Can anyone suggest some diagnostics, or is it the board?

There have been some additional updates since the first version. Can you try the initial 512M firmware:

Code: Select all

https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/blob/48f8bb0e470b7bf17fe812dc43860a0f45a6e4e2/boot/arm384_start.elf
Otherwise, you could try running rpi-update. You may need a newer kernel or /opt/vc/lib files.

Dom,

I tried this file. In fact I tried all three. I got the same result.

How do I do rpi-update to update the firmware?

Dom,

Thanks for the pointer. I had already tried the file you suggested. I worked out how to do rpi-update by following a few forum links.

Once I had run rpi-update I then copied the start384 file that rpi-update had loaded.

GUI now running with a 384/128 split.

When I try using any of the other start.elf files, the Pi won't boot. Is there more to renaming the arm384_start.elf file to start.elf?

I really hate to have a semi-thread hijack, but this, I guess, would be somewhat related(?)
Are there any higher mem splits (for the 512MB version) - towards the system, i.e. 504/8?
If so, could you try that?

and to answer the original question:
Is there more to renaming the arm384_start.elf file to start.elf?
-No, start.elf is the file that the system looks at for the memory split.
Have you made any changes to the config.txt file in /boot?

I just got my 512MB Pi and updated /boot with the latest firmware files from git (manual download).
X works great, I have set

Code: Select all

gpu_mem_512=16
in /boot/config.txt.
System is very responsive.
