I currently have a RasPi 3 B running Raspbian Pixel. I am having problems connecting to the WiFi. I had a similar problem with my other RasPi 3 B and it was solved by reformatting my SD multiple times. I have tried this a few times to no avail. I have tried editing the wpa_supplicant.conf file as well as sudo raspi-conf. When I type ifconfig or iwlist scan scanning is not available and ifconfig is not recognized. Please help!

Start with a fresh SDCard, a copy of Raspbian Stretch and Etcher. Use Etcher to write Stretch to your SDCard (no formatting needed).

Is there anything I could do if I still wanted to use NOOBS? I have tried flashing images before and I run into problems alot.

What does NOOBS give you? Apart from wasting 1.3GB of space and giving you a way to lose everything you've done.

It didn't work I flashed Raspbian stretch on a fresh SD and it didnt work. I then tried all of the methods I mentioned before.

Can you post exactly what you see when you try and run iwlist and ifconfig? (Maybe take a photo of the screen)

What does ls -l /sbin/ifconfig show you?
What does iwconfig show you?

You initially said "ifconfig is not recognized", yet your photo shows the output from ifconfig.

There are lots of posts in the forum about Raspbian apparently not seeing the on board wifi chip, no very consistent solution.

Some people fixed it by turning off wpa_supplicant and reverting to configuring wifi via /etc/network/interfaces.
Others seem to have a hardware fault and had to use a USB wifi adapter.

I was able to get internet! I tried flashing Raspbian and pasting in NOOBS. Raspbian had the same result as earlier and I was able to connect once again with NOOBS. Thanks for all the help!

Hi

I am experiencing a similar problem. I am running Raspbian Stretch 2018-08 version.
I can see my wlan0 module through ifconfig and iwconfig and from the screen I can see the available wifi networks but when I choose mine and use the password it doe not connect at all.

From the qouted reply I see you mentioning NOOBS. does that mean you left Raspbian to solve the problem?

So I originally started by using NOOBS and it was recommended that I try flashing Raspbian. I tried it to no avail. I reformatted my SD at least 3 times, and on the third time I could connect to my WiFi Dongle via sudo raspi-config. Try it out and let me know if it works!

Wow, a time traveler from the future! Perhaps that future version was written specifically for the Pi4? What does it say on the download page in your time period? And next time you're popping back to the past, can you bring me a Pi4, please?

Are you using right-click or left-click to get to the WiFi key entry?

I have tried both my Raspberry Pi Zero and Raspberry Pi 3 for over 2 weeks solid and I am STILL unable to connect wirelessly (wlan0). I am trying to connect to my home network which is WEP (I know it is insecure). I have no idea what to try next that I have not already tried.

I have tried using wpa_supplicant.conf and not using it (w/ interfaces).
My /etc/network/interfaces looks like:
auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

iface eth0 inet dhcp

#auto wlan0
allow-hotplug wlan0
iface wlan0 inet dhcp
wpa-ssid My-network-name
wpa-psk My-password
wireless-power off
allow-hotplug wlan1
iface wlan1 inet manual
wpa-conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

When I do
ip link show wlan0
I get
<NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP>
which I think implies that I am unable to connect for some reason, possibly a bad password. I have tried using my network password and my wireless password (the one which allows users to connect to my network).

What am I doing wrong? Needless to say this is driving me insane. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As an addendum. Since I cannot wifi w/ my Raspberry Pi Zero I will have to RMA it. Its keyboard also does not work (a common symptom) and since I cannot SSH w/ no network I have no way to communicate to it.

This works for me

Put file /etc/network/interfaces back to it's default and add the following network setting to file /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf

        key_mgmt=NONE
        auth_alg=OPEN
        wep_key0=WEP-hex-key
}

Note:- no quotation marks around the WEP-hex-key.

OK I have found the problem.... sort of. Its not a faulty pi or that I have NOOBs v. img, the problem lies in the microSD card.

Now the only question is... how do I fix it? should I invest in a new one?

Try your SDCard in some other RPi.
Try the power supply from some other RPi.
Download plain Raspbian Stretch 2018-03-13 and https://etcher.io, use Etcher to write Raspbian to a factory fresh SDCard.

When all those three tests fail you have bad hardware (exceedingly unlikely unless you've abused the GPIO pins).

I tried using different pis and it says that there is no internet on either one.. leading me to believe that its the SD that is faulty.
However, I then tried using a working card in both pis and it still does not work on the pi that had the problem originally.

Try fresh Raspbian 2018-03-13 with a good pi and the suspect pi.
