Major Startx problem

Thu Nov 23, 2017 8:27 pm

Ok, so I was trying to change the operating system from Wheezy to Jessie, and I input the commands on this website:

https://www.howtoforge.com/tutorial/how ... e-release/

And after I did:

Code: Select all

apt-get dist-upgrade
There was an error that I can't reference, but this resulted in startx being unusable, because "server x is unavailable." Being the idiot I am, I tried to change the config settings to go directly to desktop instead of logging in, but now it's a never-ending black screen. I had it on for an hour, and it was always a black screen. Now I can't input any commands at all. Help!
What? What do you mean it's outdated? I swear it was fine a while ago...

Reburn your sdcard with the newer distro version. The easiest way to fix it.

Cheers.

the commands to upgrade is to upgrade wheezy first by $ sudo apt-get upgrade then add the jessie repo then $ sudo apt-get update then $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
but distro upgrades are prone to error such as missing packages or old configuration so you should just download jessie (we are now using stretch) and burn it to a microsd/sd card

So y'all are saying I need to clear everything?

Yep.

I don't discourage anyone from learning Linux, (and fixing a failed upgrade WOULD be a learning experience) but if you would rather mess around with programming your RPi than fixing OS problems, a new image is much more expedient.
