Ethernet slower than internal wifi?

Thu Oct 19, 2017 9:52 pm

Hello,
I did some speedtests with speedtest-cli and I got these results.
Image

I also did these test some time later and they still said that my internal wifi is faster then my 300Mbps-wifi-usb-adapter and internal ethernet.

My bandwidth should be between 20-30Mbps down and 6Mbps up (at least).
Distance to router is 2 meters, Ethernet-cable is 3m, adapter is AWUS052NH(300mbps).

Is this normal??
Greetings

I am supprised that the Ethernet down load is slower I would have expected it to be able to reach full down load speed on 30 mbs broad band connection.
I have a pi2 set up to do speed tests on my 70 mbs broadband and it has no problem reaching full speed if fact at off peak times it often reaches 76mbs the same as my desktop pc.

Are all the speed tests on all the connections to the same server on both the pi and your pc ?

What else is the Pi doing, particularly on USB? The on-board Ethernet is connected via a single shared USB port.

I am surprised too.
At the raspberry I used the command/program "speedtest-cli".
My computer uses http://www.speedtest.net .

I connected it to my smartphone hotspot and instantly got 30mbps over 4G/LTE....
Maybe I try another ethernet cable but I dont think that this is the reason. :|

USB-devices:
1x Dongle for 2,4GHz keyboard/mouse
2x Wifiadapter (default Y-cable, enough power, no lightning symbol)
1x not used

I am connected over SSH and VNC. No display.

EDIT:
Is there any possibility to check max transfer bandwidth inside the LAN-network eg. between computer and raspi in mbps?

It is hardly surprising - Ethernet and WiFi dongle use the USB2 hub so the fastest you could expect is 30MB/s if nothing else is using the hub. The on-board WiFi is direct sdio connection.

I am going to try the program iperf today.
apt-get install iperf

Thanks

Try disconnecting the USB Wifi, and see if that fixes it.

Start by looking at which adapter has the route to your gateway router.

Post the output from
ip addr show
ip link show
ip route

My router-ip/gateway is 192.168.2.1.
I deactivated wifi (internal and external) and unplugged all usb-devices except the keyboard-dongle.

I also tested network speeds with iperf:
LINK/Picture:
Image

This shows that theoretically I could get ~84mbps bandwidth over LAN.
However when I check speedtest-cli again it says:

RASPI
Ping: 39ms
Download: 12,40Mbps
Upload: 5,46Mbps

PC - VirtualMachine/Ubuntu
Ping: 38ms
Download: 25,86Mbps
Upload: 5,59Mbps

Both with speedtest-cli on the same server!
And again Raspi only has half bandwidth... :(

So just be way of another speed test to see if its some thing to do with speedtest.cli or python.

Now if i run this on one of my test pi's it will be on Jessie lite using 2 ssh connections one to display results and one to download file.

so first install nload

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install nload
once installed
now in the first ssh screen run nload.

in the second ssh screen you need to download a test file as you have not said were in the world you are select the nearest down load file from the ones on this site : https://linhost.info/2013/10/download-test-files/
just copy paste the appropriate line.

This is the sort of output you will get from nload

Image

as you can see you get max, min and curr download / upload speeds.

Ok I guess it was some kind of performance problem.
So I installed Raspbian and overclocked the cpu to 1420MHz which seems stable after I had a freeze at 1450MHz.

Now my download-speed reaches up to 25Mbits over wifi and ethernet.
Image

By the way the reason why I came here was because I had a Garry's Mod (Source-Engine) server running and it went awesome until the 4th player joined.
The server began to lag and that was because of a high ping >200 and not because of RAM-usage (50%!) or CPU (80%).
So I tested the bandwidth and the RPi only had 6-7mbits down / 4-5mbits up which is not enough.

Now with the overclock it should run smoother I hope  .

Out of interest which pi are you using ?

Because a pi 2 or 3 should not need over clocking to saturate the LAN connection and achieve full speed.
my pi 2 is not over clocked and it reaches speeds of 76Mbits with out any problems.

It is a new RPi 3.
My internet connection sometimes is not consistently because it is a combination of DSL (max 4-5mbps) and LTE (5-30mbps) so that I mostly have got 25mbps but nevertheless it is conspicuous that the RPi is much slower in direct comparison.

(Raspbian-Browser is capable of using www.speedtest.net!)

When I used a smartphone hotspot with a galaxy s7 I also reached higher bandwidth like 20-30mbps which accords to my phones LTE-speed.

In two weeks I will check how RPi performs when I plug it into a dsl100 connection.

May be the fact that you are using a combination of DSL (max 4-5mbps) and LTE (5-30mbps) is what's causing your problems.

It will be good to compare it when using a DLS100 connection I suspect you will find even at stock cpu speed you will see much faster speed tests , but just be aware that you will probably not get full 100Mbits download speed as the LAN port is only 100Mbits and you will have some overheads on the connection but you might see speeds in 90-95 range.
