No wireless interfaces found - Raspberry Pi Zero W

Hello guys,

I come here with my last breath to ask for your help. I've been trying to solve this problem for 10 hours now, without stopping. I have browsed the whole forum, this and many others, several attempts to change the settings, commands, six different images installed, three SD cards with different speeds, but nothing solved, I'm starting to think that it is a hardware problem.

I have a Raspberry Pi Zero W V1.1 ($ cat/proc/cpuinfo tells me that too). It has the WiFi chip BCM2835. I have already tried to make all possible changes in the interface and wpa_supplicant files, without effect. I do not get any data on the existence of the wlan0 network in any command I execute, this includes:

 ifconfig, iwconfig, ifconfig -a, ifdown / ifup wlan0
All with sudo.

All of them return information to me that the wlan0 interface is not configured, does not exist, does not support or is not working. I am using a standard Samsung 5V 2A charger, so power is not the problem. It works perfectly except the WiFi interface.

I have already used the following images:
  • Raspbian Stretch, with desktop and lite version, both updated: August 2017
    Release date: 2017-08-16
    Kernel version: 4.9
  • PiBakery, with the default WiFi settings for my network
  • Raspbian Jessie, June 21, 2017 version
I have also tried to use two phones with Bluetooth Tethering, Internet over USB and AD-Hoc.

The configuration of the interface and wpa_supplicant files is very simple because I have given up trying to change advanced settings, if not the simplest ones work.

I had already managed to make the WiFi network work with the Jessie version, but currently neither with it the wlan interface works. Unless I'm lucky enough for my Rasp. having been struck by a cosmic ray, there is nothing that could have damaged it, since I have kept it well guarded since the last use.

Please, I have not received any answers so far and I have not been able to solve it myself, I appreciate any help! Thank you.

I was able to connect via SSH-USB, using a pre-configured SD card I set up with Jessie, and I also did not succeed in any attempt to configure WiFi. I got access to log journalctl, which shows that there are errors in wpa_supplicant configuration during boot. It also seems to be related to the following error:

wpa_supplicant: /sbin/wpa_supplicant daemon failed to start
run-parts: /etc/network/if-pre-up.d/wpasupplicant exited with return code 1
Failed to bring up wlan0.
Using a magnifying glass in front of my phone's camera, I found a mark on the upper side of the WiFi / Bluetooth chip. But bluetooth works, WiFi does not:

I also had no WiFi on a unit I bought sometime back but didn't try until last night. Figuring I just got a bad unit I bought another one locally today only to have the same problem with it. I did some digging and found a post where somebody recommended PiBakery. It runs on either Windows or Mac and you use it to configure an image ahead of time (including the network SSID and password). I tried it and it worked - I now have WiFi up and going on both units.

I have no experience with Raspbian and I am a beginner in Linux, and I am also a beginner in the area of Raspberry Pi's, I do not know how to solve this error, because it seems that the error level is very low, lower than the operating system itself. That shouldn't be a problem now with 2017-09-07 Stretch. The RPF folks should have fixed it.

Hello All,

I've had similar problems on a pi zero w running headless.. The wifi would not come up at all.
It appears that wpa_supplicant can die (in daemon mode) if problems are caused by something in wpa_supplicant.conf.

In my particular case, following the recommended procedures didn't work at all. I'm suspicious that some sort of interaction with a component of systemd is the cause of this.. Just a guess as I've had many other weird problems on systemd machines.

In my particular case it turned out that the wifi encryption settings on my router were not quite "as advertised". When I had finally cracked the problem, I then experimented with wifi on several other home routers. Most worked as expected, but a few "big brand names" didn't.

My personal solution which works with every router wifi that I've tried is this:

Edit your wpa_supplicant to something like this:

Save the file and reboot. I've found a couple of routers that when set to WPA need proto=WPA2 and one that needed proto=WPA when set to WPA2.

Hi All,

I've been attempting to set up a Raspberry Pi Zero W to run headless for use as a networked door spy hole webcam.
It will be connected to a modified USB webcam which I've fitted inside one of the larger sized spy hole viewers.

I'm using Raspian Stretch lite and have had the usual wifi connection problems.

I've experimented with this on a few different spare home routers that have been set up as wifi access points (i.e. connected to the cabled network only). DHCP is disabled on each one and the device IP address is changed so it doesn't conflict with my broadband router or anything else on the network. This allows me to experiment and make changes that don't affect anyone online elsewhere in the house.

I've tested wifi connectivity on a few different models of wifi routers.
Including:- BT home hubs, a couple of Netgears, an Asus and two no-name Chinese models plus a few others that I can't remember the names of.

The specific router wifi encryption settings are not always as clear as they could be. I've even found a couple of naming errors. I think that some of the problems that some folk have been having are down to their specific encryption settings.

See below for a quick description of how to test.

Here is a collection of the working wpa_supplicant.conf files. These are for various encryption types/settings :-

Obviously, you'll need to replace the ssid and psk entries with your own.
(1) and (2) work with the older routers (I've ignored WEP totally).
(3) and (4) are only present on my newer kit.

(1) WPA-PSK TKIP cipher/encryption.

I don't use the "update_config=1" on other linux systems (headless etc.) but it is stated as required here.

Testing procedure:

Run all commands as root. i.e. use sudo su to gain elevated status.
Don't bother messing with the current wpa_supplicant.conf file yet. Just use a temporary test file in a test directory.
I used test.conf in temporary directory. (e.g. mkdir ~/r . Full path is /home/pi/r/test.conf )

Check your router settings for your wifi settings (if possible).
Create the test.conf in /home/pi/r
One way of doing this is as follows:-
Move to the test directory.

  nano ./test.conf
Add the required entries from above, with your SSID and PSK. Now Ctrl-x, then y and finally the enter key to save the file.

Kill the current wpa_supplicant (if running). This releases wlan0 (the onboard wifi) properly for testing purposes. Alternatively, you can test using a USB wifi dongle. This is normally seen as wlan1 if your pi has onboard wifi.

Open a terminal (or login to a virtual terminal), become Root, cd to ~/r (/home/pi/r) and enter the following... N.B. Text within braces is a comment for you.. don't enter this.

  wpa_cli -i wlan0 terminate {kill the background (daemon) wpa_supplicant.}

  wpa_supplicant -c /home/pi/r/test.conf -i wlan0 {or -i wlan1 if using a dongle on a wifi enabled Pi.}

.... Then this indicates that your Pi is talking to your wifi router/AP but that there is a misconfiguration in your test.conf . Use Ctrl-c to kill the process and return to a terminal prompt.

Modify your config file and retry.

If your terminal response is...

...with no terminal prompt returned (wpa_supplicant is currently not running as a daemon), then your test.conf is correct. Wifi access should now be possible.
Open another terminal (or move to another virtual terminal with Ctrl+alt+F(x), e.g. Ctrl+alt+F2 for the second virtual terminal.). Now try pinging your router.
Mine is on 192.168.1.1 , so if: ...

... returns something like:

Use Ctrl-c to kill the process.

Now move to your previous virtual terminal and kill the wpa_supplicant process (Ctrl+c).

Now backup the existing wpa_supplicant.conf and copy the test.conf to this location, named as wpa_supplicant.conf

From within ~/r .

 cp /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf /etc/wpa-supplicant/wpa_supplicant.confLAST
 cp ./test.conf /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf
Now restart your Pi. If all is well, your Pi will connect to Wifi.

Thanks bodge99, your post is very good, it will probably help other people with encryption problems between routers and Pi's. Unfortunately I think I'm correct about the driver problem, since the answer I got was this:

Having this same issue. Does anyone have a solution? I have tried the settings bodge99 suggests, that match my router to no effect.

Hello, the same issue to me. I was working with some pi zero modules that were working at the beginning. I touched them a lot of times to insert inside a box and sometime I've experienced an electrostatic discharge (I felt it on my fingers). I think this is the cause of the disappeared module. In my opinion the discharge has burned the wifi chipset.

For some reason / magic wpa_supplicant won't trigger Wi-Fi in desktop mode on my pi zero w, while it works OK when I boot in terminal.
Did your issue happened in headless mode?
Ssh, USB-gadget ssh and terminal works OK for me.

Hi,
I've got the same problem with my raspberry pi zero W, I've tried many fresh installation but no one working and tells me that there are no interfaces for both bluetooth and Wifi.
Has anyone solved the problem?
