Raspbmc is freezing :\

Thu Oct 04, 2012 9:02 pm

I got the Pi today so I put in my pre-prepped Kingston S4/16GB with some fresh Raspbmc on it and try it. Well it works! However, I'm getting intermittent locks up. I checked my peripherals and Wiki reports they should all work perfectly, both SD card & the wireless keyboards (Logitech Mk250 & Rii wireless keyboard).

I haven't tried a regular usb keyboard yet, but this is really odd. My psu was bought along with the Pi from RS so it should be more than appropriate.

I didn't hook up anything besides the sd card, hdmi, ethernet and the keyboard wifi dongle.

I connected it to my Dell U2410. Seems to work flawlessly in that regard.

Very likely a power supply issue.

Possibly made worse by the wireless keyboard using more than 100mA. Can you try a different keyboard?

Like I initially said, I tried two wireless keyboards which are known to be compatible. Then I tried a Dell wired usb keyboard and same thing happened. Earlier, I took my SD card and put a Raspbian “wheezy” image on it, then I started the gui and worked with it for a while. No issues whatsoever. I think it's something specifically with Raspbmc. I also tried a different psu and had the same issues so I don't think it's the psu.

It seems like lots of people have problem with RC5, including me. I guess we have to wait for a new release that works.

In a desperate attempt to make Raspbmc appear to be faster than other XBMC distros, the author of Raspbmc decided to put

arm_freq=800
force_turbo_mode=1

in the config.txt - and that's just in the preloader (why does one need to overclock to download a file ? )

who knows what's in the config.txt of the final image that may or may not be cobbled together by the clunkatron preloader - 6 attempts, and all I've managed to get is a config.txt on an otherwise empty SD card, so I can't tell you

check the config.txt ... it may well be that in vain hope of appearing to be the fastest XBMC, there are stupid overclocking values in there (I know my pi has intermittent issue on arm_freq ABOVE 800 - without overVOLTing as well)

alternatively, try xbian or openelec - they work, they don't force overclocking on you
I now own 2 RPi - does that mean I own a circumference?

Even so, maybe you got a bad power supply, anyway to dig up a temporary supply? Do you have a PC kicking around with USB ports, could temporarily run the PI off of it to see if the problem continues. Lastly it could just be the overclocking is the problem, but running at 800MHz shouldn't cause problems. Above that speed, locking up might be a problem.

I deleted everything in the config.txt when I installed raspbmc on the SD card via my PC. I still have lots of problems with corrupted SD card and so on.

It could well be the overclocking option that is causing your problem; I am lucky enough to have two Pi's - one of them runs quite happily with full turbo mode (up to 1GHz on-demand) while the other hangs as soon as it hits 800MHz.

Locking up for me too. Been running Raspbian for a month with no problems. Haven't been able to play a video yet without Raspbmc locking up. :( Will try one of the other distro's.

Did anyone manage to fix this?

I got back from a weeks holiday, and restarted the Pi with Raspbmc. I glanzed from another room that it installed something on it. And after that the XBMC is not behaving as usual. When playing any movie, it begins lagging after 15-20 seconds. The XBMC gets unresponsive and i have to resort to

Code: Select all

sudo restart xbmc
This happens with any video.

I did a

Code: Select all

pico /scripts/upd_hist/build_info
It says:
Raspbmc Testing Branch, with Hard Floating Point
Release Candidate 4, Built: 20120807

Is there another place to see what might be wrong, and how do I downgrade to RC3??

thanks in advance

Where can I obtain RC4? The installer on the official website only gets you the latest.
