USB + LAN ports not working.

Thu Oct 04, 2012 10:11 am

I've been playing with my pi for a couple of days now. Yesterday I bought a wireless keyboard which worked fine for a while, then I switched off and installed a different distro on the SD card (wheezy) and when I rebooted the keyboard and lan ports don't work. They don't appear to supply power and inserting a lan cable gives no response, LED or otherwise.

I had a look around and apparently it could be a result of "polyfuses". I had no idea these even existed but I left it off overnight and still have exactly the same problem.

A bit more investigation says this should be fixed with Pi v2. I believe I have this version as my board has 2 mounting holes , but clearly there is still something wrong.

what power supply are you using
what is the power as measured from tp1 tp2

The first thing to do is measuring the TP1 TP2 voltage.
Next, I would try the working stuff again. It can be a coincidence that it doesn't work anymore after the switch of os, or it could be caused by that.
Try a wired keyboard if you have one lying around. There seems to be more problems with wireless keyboards.
So, it just boots to the raspi-config setup screen. The network lights stay off and the keyboard isn't working?

I forgot to mention, wired keyboards don't work, nothing plugged into the USB ports show any signs of power. I also tried resinstalling wheezy and then when that didn't work, rasbmc, but that needs the LAN connection so it's a dead end too. There are no signs of life for any of them.

Wheezy boots to the screen which allows you to expand the root to fill the memory, change keyboard/language settings etc.

Do I have a v2 board?

The image on the right there suggests that's it's not surprising that both are broken?

Yes, they both are integrated in the same chip.
There has been reports of the xtal for the chip not being properly soldered.
It's on the bottom of the board.
There also are reports that the chip refuses to work if the operating voltage is 2 low. That's why I suggested to check that first.

I foolishly assumed that any usb charger would work, now I read my my output is 400mA

A few questions before I disappear in shame:

Why did it work fine for a few days then flatly refuse to do anything?
If I do have v2 then can I power it backwards using a powered USB hub?

Thanks again for all your help.

Probably - it depends on whether the hub puts out enough power.

Note that you could power v1 boards by attaching a USB cable from a powered hub to the Pi power micro USB socket. It was just that you lost a socket on the hub to this use.

I bought a 1000mA power supply and have exactly the same problem. What should my next step be?

Buy a mulitmeter or borrow one from a friend. You can get cheap ones for less than GBP 10 which are probably adequate. The measure the voltage as suggested by others earlier. Just because your new PSU says it delivers 1 amp does not necessarily mean it delivers the right voltage.

With the number of fakes around and general cheap c**p stuff what it says on the label doesn't mean much......

sounds a bit much TBH
5V +/- 5% is
4.75V - 5.25V - is this a digital meter and measuring TP1 TP2 ?
what power supply are you using url ?

this will probably not make your USB / NIC work

what components are you using - post links for us

I hope this doesn't happen when the RPis are sent to schools!

It doesn't work with any of the USB appliances before and the LAN port does not work. It is not a fault with the peripherals. This is the PSU

It's 5.16 if I measure the other way around - an average of ~5.2v

I think it's gotten to the point where it's got to go back. I under stand it's not a plugnplay project but this is a bit much.

and nothing works
then a returns may be in order,
however
what keyboard ?
what hub ?
does the board look OK
do the USB sockets look OK?
what NIC cable are you using / can you plug it into your PC / router and anything light up
you may have a bad board it's possible

That's my problem. I know the keyboard and LAN cables are good because it did briefly work fine and they all work in my PC. The board and USB sockets look fine. There was no physical cause for the break.
