I guess you are attempting this 'the hard way' because there is some reason why you cannot connect the RPi ethernet cable directly to the same network device as your Mac?
I'm trying to run my pi through my laptop via ethernet so I don't have to use a monitor and buy a keyboard and mouse.
That's what I do, with the difference that I connect the RPi to my home network, not directly to a laptop.
After doing some research it appears I have to do this through SSH but have to enable it on the pi somehow??
That was the first advice I gave you, and based on your reply you seem to have done that.

But enabling communication via one specific protocol will not help until you establish a protocol-independent TCP/IP network connection between the 2 devices.

@Ernst has given detailed advice about how to proceed to troubleshoot your situation.

There is a UK gameshow (Dragons Den) where participants leave the game with the catchphrase "And for that reason, I'm out... "

I don't think I have anything else to contribute to this discussion and will withdraw in the hope that someone more Mac-aware may be able to assist.
