Are you sure you're using a HDMI-to-
DVI converter and not a HDMI-to-
VGA converter? No active
conversion is needed from HDMI to DVI since they're both, similar if not identical, digital video signals and the "conversion" is basically connecting one type of "plug" to another. HDMi to VGA however does require converting a digital signal to a (set of) analogue signals.

Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm
