Shorted out SenseHAT leds?

I fear I might have short-circuited something important on my SenseHAT; on power up the leds flashed brightly and went dark, rather than doing the brief rainbow thing as normal.
The temp/pressure/humidity and IMU seem ok though, so maybe, just maybe this is fixable? Does anyone know where I might test connections to find out? Is there a poly fuse I need to let recover from its trauma?
A couple of attempts at rebooting and power-off/on result in a repeat of the bright flash and a lack of an initialized /dev/fb* with the right name details.
