rsync: command not found

Sat Mar 04, 2017 3:24 pm

I've recently installed Rasbian Jessie Lite and was trying to use rsync but got the following error:

Code: Select all

-bash: rsync: command not found
This was tried both using the Pi locally and over SSH so it's not an SSH restriction of any kind.
Does this distro not come with rsync pre-installed? If not, which aptitude package do I need to install to get this?

It seems that it's actually not installed by default as part of the distro as no results are returned when searching for /usr/bin/rsync. I'd always assumed it was. However, I had usually been installing samba very early on and I suspect rsync is part of that package - https://rsync.samba.org/

After recently deciding to choose NFS over samba, that's how I noticed it was not installed. However, rsync is part of many other Linux distros by default without having samba installed.

rsync has its own package. You can install it via

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install rsync
