Problem with hostapd and rsapberry pi running alfa AWUS036H

Sun Sep 16, 2012 1:57 am

Hi, I have been searching high and low for a solution to this problem to no avail.

Info: Raspberry pi model B, Raspbian "wheezy", Lexar 16gb SD 400x, Alfa AWUS036H Power by usb hub

I recently loaded raspbian wheezy onto my pi and got everything loaded and running just fine. I can even "iwlist scan" using my wifi dongle and it shows a bnch of nearby access points.

The problem I have is when i try to use hostapd:
I start with the minimal config:

interface=wlan0
driver=nl80211
ssid=test
channel=1

and get the following errors:
rfkill: Cannot open RFKILL control device
Failed to update rate sets in kernel module
Could not connect to kernel driver.
Using interface wlan0 with hwaddr 00:c0:ca:61:da:70 and ssid 'test'
Failed to set beacon parameters
Could not connect to kernel driver.

Here is some more info:

Any ideas on fixing this?

You left out a space in the command.
iw list
.

Don't think you'll be able to use hostapd with that USB device.
It doesn't support AP mode.

Unless it's the firmware / drivers that you are using that doesn't support AP mode.
Someone using a AWUS036EH has AP mode under their iw list though...

Hey thanks for your help. I just swapped my AWUS036H for another Alfa wifi dongle I had lying around (AWUS036NH) and it works now.

My R-Pi has 2 wifi dongles attached. One is configured as an AP, the other connects to a hotspot. When I set this up last summer, it worked but only after moving the dongles around the hub sockets, so the one to be wlan0 and the one to be wlan1 were assigned correctly. Over the winter, presumably due to upgrades, 2 things have happened:

I found that the dongle which was supposed to be the AP now comes up as wlan0! Swapping them over in their sockets has put it right!! Any ideas on why this should happen?

Secondly, hostapd.conf has the line ieee80211n=1 to set wireless N. That worked fine until the change above. Now, unless I comment out that line, I get the message during boot up "Failed to update rate sets in kernel module" and iw list shows 54kBps as the highest bitrate (non HT) and yet this dongle was running as 802.11n before (Amiko).
Again, any ideas please.

Thanks
