mmcblk0 controller never released inhibit bit(s)

Hi All,
New to the forums, intermediate Linux understanding - purchased a couple Pi's (one destined to be running Raspbmc, and the other Wheezy web server)
SD cards: Patriot LX 16GB microSDHC's (PSF16GMCSDHC10) with adapter
Distros tried: Raspbian-wheezy-2012-08-16, Raspbian-R3 (unofficial), Raspbmc (latest).
Issue 1: Both OS's are having the same problem, they start booting and run into mmc0 never released inhibit bit(s) followed by dev mmcblk0 errors. "Warning: drivers/mmc/host/sdhci.c:1048 sdhci_send_command+0xb58/0xc34()" and numerous timeouts.
Verified the "LOCK" tab is in the correct position to permit writing to the card
Attempted fixes:
1) rpi-update kernel - since can't boot Raspbian to desktop I downloaded rpi-update and attempted to run manually from terminal using "ROOT_PATH=/media/rootID BOOT_PATH=/media/bootID rpi-update" also tried rpi-update 128/192 options with no avail.
(each time using HardFP's)
**Side issue - raspbian configures boot partition with 0 space remaining making it a hassle to update manually offline or edit config.txt file??** Is there a fix for this?
2) cmdline.txt - adding sdhci-bcm2708.enable_llm=1 sdhci-bcm2708.sync_after_dma=0 (individually or together)
I've spent a solid day on this and unable to find a workaround. Day two already well underway, at this point I'll try anything (except another type of card)!
Thanks in advance!
