Capture video from webcam without monitor connected.

Hello,
I'm trying to capture video from webcam after RPi starts.
When I type this command in console:

ffmpeg -loglevel quiet -v quiet -f video4linux2 -s 320x240 -i /dev/video0 -r 30 -t 00:00:30 /home/pi/webcam`date +%j%H%M%S`.mpg
everything is fine - 30 seconds video is captured and saved to /home/pi/webcam[date].mpg file.
When I put this command into /etc/rc.local, after reboot again video is captured.
But when I connect to RPi only webcam and power supply after boot webcam is working but ignore 30 seconds limitation. When I turn off RPi file /home/pi/webcam[date].mpg is created but it has 0 bytes size.
I think the problem is disconnected HDMI and/or ffmpeg trying to write some informations on console even with -loglevel quiet -v quiet.

How can I capture video with time limit after RPi boot.

Hi,

Do you get any logging output with 'debug' in stead of 'quiet'? Check /var/log/debug, /var/log/messages.

Hi,
I've done one reboot with everything connected and second reboot only with webcam.
In second case the /var/log/debug has one more line (the last one - ntpd signal_no_reset):

I've moved ffmpeg command to .profile and after reboot with webcam only I use ssh to shutdown RPi and after login I saw this message:

It looks like this is why ffmpeg doesn't start up:

[video4linux2 @ 0x1357220] Cannot find a proper format for codec_id 0, pix_fmt -1.
/dev/video0: Input/output error

I don't know enough about it to help you further there, sorry.
Have you considered using mjpg-streamer or motion, to use with your webcam? My experience is that they are easier to setup than ffserver/ffmpeg...

I'll try to force codec for ffmpeg and will see what happen.

Can you tell me how to install mjpg-streamer. I try apt-get but I've got error Unable to locate package.

Now I will try to use motion.

Solved,
This is probably not the simplest way but it works.
  • Set up Raspberry Pi to start lxde after boot (sudo raspi-config)
  • Create directory ~/.config/autostart
  • Create file ~/.config/autostart/auto.desktop

Comment=Capture video
Exec=lxterminal --command "/home/pi/videos/record"
Terminal=true
  • Install guvcview (sudo apt-get install guvcview)
  • Create directory ~/videos
  • Create file ~/videos/record and make it executable (chmod +x ~/videos/record)

rm -f ~/videos/movie.avi
guvcview -s 320x240 -t 300 -n ~/videos/movie.avi --exit_on_close --no_display
  
After reboot Raspberry Pi will try to record 300 seconds video.

Hi,

I am using raspberry pi with Debian Wheezy. I installed OpenCv 2.3.1. I can take images with my logitech hd 720p usb web cam using openCv program but failed to take video. it shows error:
OpenCV Error: Unsupported format or combination of formats (Gstreamer Opencv backend doesn't support this codec acutally.)

But when I enter the command
ffmpeg -loglevel quiet -v quiet -f video4linux2 -s 320x240 -i /dev/video0 -r 30 -t 00:00:30 /home/pi/webcam`date +%j%H%M%S`.mpg

It takes the video.

i can't understand what is the problem. I need a solution. Could you help me?

I don't know, if this helps anyone of you with the problems, but I build a solution for me last night, which works great.
The video is recorded with 30 fps on a remote server, which builds a simple jpeg-driven "Live Stream".
But the main part, the recording of the webcam is a simple ffmpeg-command, which you can find here:

I found a similar problem when I tried to create video using images which I already stored in a folder. using cvCreateVideoWriter..

JacekQ, I can confirm I had motion working on a headless Pi. Unfortunately I'm waiting for a replacement (stupidly ordered in from RS) as I broke the SC card reader on the original. From memory, it was pretty straight forward once I'd tuned motion.conf.

Please share what you have working, I am very much interested in learning more about the Raspberry Pi using motion to record video. I have another Raspberry Pi on order as I would like to try to do this and possibly using a python program written to push the recorded videos to a Tivo for recording/viewing, I think it would be great having the ability to view a wireless usb security video as an option on our Tivo. I still have xbmc on a card in case I want to go back to that but now sending recorded video to the Tivo is more interesting.

Currently I have a Raspberry pi with the JDK running an older version of Galleon, a java media server for Tivo and it does well with internet web cams but with the python programs pytivo & streambaby I might be able to use actual video and record it as well.

On edit: One of the things I really like about the Raspberry Pi is that once you get something working you can clone it on a different SD card and it will work on another Raspberry Pi with a few changes.

Now I have new raspbian image installed and I have to install motion again. Last time Motion was working but I don't remember that I can't capture video or video quality was very poor or I can't set it to just capture video for specified time without motion reocognition.
